In their fourth season under head coach Charles Dudley Daly, the Cadets compiled a 9–0 record and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 235 to 36.[1] In the annual Army–Navy Game, the Cadets defeated the Midshipmen 15 to 7. The Cadets also defeated Notre Dame by a score of 30 to 10 and Villanova by a 69 to 7 score.[2] The 1916 Army team was selected retroactively as the 1916 national champion by Parke H. Davis.[3] Fullback Elmer Oliphant from the 1916 Army team was a consensus first-team All-American and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.[4][5] Center John McEwan received second-team honors from Walter Camp,[6] the United Press,[7] the International News Service,[8] and Walter Eckersall.[9] Schedule{{CFB schedule|{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 30 | w/l = w | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1916|team=Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen|title=Lebanon Valley}} | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 3–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 7 | w/l = w | opponent = Washington & Lee | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 14–7 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 14 | w/l = w | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1916|team=Holy Cross Crusaders|title=Holy Cross}} | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 17–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 21 | w/l = w | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1916|team=Trinity Bantams|title=Trinity (CT)}} | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 53–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 28 | w/l = w | opponent = Villanova | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 69–7 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 4 | w/l = w | opponent = Notre Dame | gamename = Rivalry | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 30–10 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 11 | w/l = w | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1916|team=Maine Black Bears|title=Maine}} | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 17–3 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 18 | w/l = w | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1916|team=Springfield Pride|title=Springfield (MA)}} | site_stadium = The Plain | site_cityst = West Point, NY | score = 17–2 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 25 | w/l = w | neutral = y | opponent = Navy | gamename = Rivalry | site_stadium = Polo Grounds | site_cityst = New York, NY | score = 15–7 | attend = }} }} References1. ^{{cite web|title=Army Yearly Results (1915-1919)|publisher=David DeLassus|work=College Football Data Warehouse|accessdate=July 29, 2015|url=http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/active/a/army/1915-1919_yearly_results.php}} {{1916 Army Cadets football navbox}}{{Army Black Knights football navbox}}{{College Football National Champion pre-AP Poll navbox}}{{collegefootball-season-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|title=1916 Army Black Knights Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=July 29, 2015|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/army/1916-schedule.html}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2015/FBS.pdf |title=National Poll Rankings |author=National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) |year=2015|work=NCAA Division I Football Records |publisher=NCAA |page=108 |accessdate=January 8, 2016 |format=PDF}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=2014 NCAA Football Records: Consensus All-America Selections|publisher=National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)|year=2014|accessdate=August 16, 2014|page=4|url=http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2014/Awards.pdf}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Elmer "Ollie" Oliphant|publisher=National Football Foundation|accessdate=July 30, 2015|url={{College Football HoF/url|id=1307}}}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Three Colgate Men Picked By Camp for All-American Team|work=The Syracuse Herald|date=December 26, 1916}} 7. ^{{cite news|author=H.C.
