The Crimson finished with a 3–1–3 record under first-year head coach Wingate Rollins.[1] Walter Camp did not select any Harvard players as first-team members of his 1917 College Football All-America Team.[2] The team was known as the "Informals" for legal reasons. Prior to the United States' entry into World War I, the team had signed binding contracts to play games with various universities and colleges. When war was declared, the team cancelled its season and cancelled the contracts. When students decide to play football after all, the team was denoted as an "informal" team to fulfill the desire for football without opening the team up to suits for breach of contract.[3] Schedule{{CFB schedule|attend=yes |source=yes |October 6|at|Dean Academy| |Franklin, MA|W 27–0| |[4] |October 13| |Bumpkin Island Naval Reserve|Harvard Stadium|Cambridge, Massachusetts|W 35–0|4,000|[5] |October 20| | 1st Maine Heavy Artillery|Harvard Stadium|Cambridge, Massachusetts|W 13–0| |[6] |October 27|at| Depot Brigade|Camp Devens|Ayer, MA|T 0–0| |[7] |November 3| | Portland Naval Reserve|Soldiers' Field|Cambridge, Massachusetts|T 0–0|20,000|[8] |November 10| |Camp Devens|Harvard Stadium|Cambridge, Massachusetts|T 0–0|400|[9] |November 17|at|Newport Naval Reserves| |Newport, RI|L 0–14| |[10] }} References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.gocrimson.com/sports/fball/history/Media_Center_Football_Yearly_Results |title=Harvard Football Yearly Records|work=GoCrimson.com |publisher=Harvard University |accessdate=August 13, 2014}} {{Harvard Crimson football navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:1917 Harvard Crimson Football Team}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Championship Teams Picked for Season|work=Fort Wayne Sentinel|date=November 29, 1919}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Harvard's "Informal" Team Avoids Legal Consequences|newspaper=The Sunday Star (Washington, D.C.)|date=November 4, 1917|page=V-1|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22517424/harvards_informal_team_avoids_legal/|via=Newspapers.com}} 4. ^1 {{cite news|title=Harvard Informals Shut Out Dean, 27-0: Schoolboys Unable to Smother the Line Play of Collegians|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=October 7, 1917|page=15|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-sunday-globe-oct-07-1917-p-15/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Crimson Tears Big Holes In Naval Reserves' Lines, Winning by 35 to 0|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=October 14, 1917|page=10|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-globe-oct-14-1917-p-92/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Harvard Wins in Stadium, 13-0: Beats 1st Maine Heavies in Football Battle|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=October 21, 1917|page=1|url=}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Depot Brigade Holds Harvard To 0-0 Score|newspaper=THe Boston Globe|date=October 28, 1917|page=16|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-sunday-globe-oct-28-1917-p-172/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Scoreless Tie at Soldiers Field|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=November 4, 1917|page=15|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-sunday-globe-nov-04-1917-p-14/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 9. ^{{cite news|title=Harvard, Within Scoring Distance, Misses Chances|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=November 11, 1917|page=11|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-globe-nov-11-1917-p-141/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Harvard Informals Beaten at Newport|newspaper=The Boston Globe|date=November 18, 1917|page=16|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/boston-globe-nov-18-1917-p-98/|via=NewspaperARCHIVE}} 3 : 1917 college football season|Harvard Crimson football seasons|1917 in sports in Massachusetts |
