Their head coach was Pop Warner in his eighth season. The team played its home games at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California.[1] This was the first year the team was officially known as the "Indians." The team had been referred to by that nickname for some time, but the mascot was officially adopted by a unanimous vote by the Executive Committee for the Associated Students at the end of the previous football season.[2][3] Stanford's end-of-season game against Dartmouth at Harvard Stadium remains the only time the team played in that stadium; a planned game at Harvard in 1950 was canceled.[4] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1931 |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 19 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1931|team=West Coast Army|school=United States Army|title=West Coast Army}} | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 46–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 26 | w/l = t | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1931|team=Olympic Club|title=Olympic Club}} | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 0–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 3 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Santa Clara | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 6–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 10 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Minnesota | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 13–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 17 | w/l = w | opponent = Oregon State | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 25–7 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 9 | w/l = t | away = y | opponent = Washington | site_stadium = Husky Stadium | site_cityst = Seattle, WA | score = 0–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 31 | w/l = w | opponent = UCLA | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 12–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 7 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = USC | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum | site_cityst = Los Angeles, CA | score = 0–19 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 14 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Nevada | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 26–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 21 | w/l = l | opponent = California | gamename = 37th Big Game | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | score = 0–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = December 28 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | neutral = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1931|team=Dartmouth Indians|title=Dartmouth}} | site_stadium = Harvard Stadium | site_cityst = Boston, MA | score = 32–6 }} }} References1. ^{{cite web |url = http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/pac10/stanford/yearly_results.php?year=1931 |title = Stanford Game-by-Game Results; 1931–1935 |publisher = College Football Data Warehouse |accessdate = September 24, 2014 |archive-url = https://archive.is/20140925001439/http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/pac10/stanford/yearly_results.php?year=1931 |archive-date = 2014-09-25 |dead-url = yes |df = }} {{Stanford Cardinal football navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:1931 Stanford Football Team}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://stanford.dlconsulting.com/cgi-bin/stanford?a=d&d=stanford19301126-01.2.14&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------|title=Board chosen to aid A.S.S.U. concert plans, Indian symbol to replace "Cardinal;" considered more appropriate|date=November 26, 1930|newspaper=The Stanford Daily|accessdate=September 30, 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web|title = What is the history of Stanford's mascot and nickname?|publisher= Stanford Athletics website| url= http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=208445366|accessdate = September 24, 2014}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1950/2/15/college-cancels-football-game-with-stanford//|title=College cancels football game with Stanford|newspaper=The Harvard Crimson|date=February 15, 1950}} 3 : 1931 Pacific Coast Conference football season|Stanford Cardinal football seasons|1931 in sports in California |
