The Silvertown by-election of 1940 was a wartime by-election. Silvertown was a safe Labour seat, and none of the major parties stood against the Labour candidate.[1]It was one of the last by-elections contested by the British Union of Fascists which campaigned on a platform calling for an immediate peace with Nazi Germany, a policy which won them only 151 votes.[2] {{Election box begin ||title=By-election, 22 February 1940: Silvertown}}{{Election box winning candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = James Hollins |votes = 14,343 |percentage = 92.8 |change = +11.8 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Communist Party of Great Britain |candidate = Harry Pollitt |votes = 966 |percentage = 6.2 |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = British Union of Fascists |candidate = Tommy Moran |votes = 151 |percentage = 1.0 |change = }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 13,377 |percentage = 86.6 |change = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Labour Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box end}} References1. ^"Labour Victory At Silvertown", The Times, 24 February 1940, p. 6. {{By-elections to the 37th UK Parliament}}2. ^Robert Benewick, Political Violence and Public Order, p. 291-2 6 : By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom in London constituencies|Elections in the London Borough of Newham|1940 in London|1940 elections in the United Kingdom|By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom in Essex constituencies|20th century in Essex |
