The team compiled a 3–6 record (2–4 against conference opponents) and finished in seventh place in the Big Ten Conference. Harry Stuhldreher was in his ninth year as Wisconsin's head coach.[1][2] This was the first season since 1905 that the Badgers started the season away from home. On November 11, 1944, Allan Schafer, a 17-year-old freshman quarterback, died at Wisconsin General Hospital from a hemorrhage to the lung after a hit sustained in the second half of Wisconsin's 26-7 victory over Iowa.[3] His jersey number (No. 83) was retired, and his name appears on the Camp Randall Stadium facade.[4][5] Tackle Clarence Esser received the team's most valuable player award.[6] Allan Shafer was the team captain.[7] Jug Girard, a 17-year-old freshman, was selected by Look magazine as a first-team halfback on the 1944 College Football All-America Team.[8] The team played its home games at Camp Randall Stadium. During the 1944 season, the average attendance at home games was 22,010.[9] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1944 | poll = AP | timezone = Central |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 30 | time = | w/l = w | away = y | rank = | opponent = Northwestern | site_stadium = Dyche Stadium | site_cityst = Evanston, Illinois | score = 7–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 7 | time = | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1944|team=Marquette Golden Avalanche|title=Marquette}} | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, Wisconsin | score = 21–2 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 14 | time = | w/l = l | homecoming = y | rank = 19 | opponent = Ohio State | opprank = 8 | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, Wisconsin | score = 7–20 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 21 | time = | w/l = l | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = | opponent = Notre Dame | opprank = 1 | site_stadium = Notre Dame Stadium | site_cityst = Notre Dame, Indiana | score = 13–28 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 28 | time = | w/l = l | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = Great Lakes Navy | opprank = 16 | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, Wisconsin | score = 12–40 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 4 | time = | w/l = l | away = y | rank = | opponent = Purdue | site_stadium = Ross–Ade Stadium | site_cityst = West Lafayette, Indiana | score = 0–35 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 11 | time = | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = Iowa | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, Wisconsin | score = 26-7 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 18 | time = | w/l = l | away = y | rank = | opponent = Michigan | opprank = 5 | site_stadium = Michigan Stadium | site_cityst = Ann Arbor, Michigan | score = 0–14 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 25 | time = | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Minnesota | site_stadium = Camp Randall Stadium | site_cityst = Madison, Wisconsin | score = 26–28 }} }}[1][2] See also
