The cause of the crash was determined to be pilot error, with the crew deviating from the designated airway and flying below a safe altitude.[2] The crash was the deadliest aviation disaster of 1947, and was eventually tied with the crash of an Eastern Air Lines DC-4 near Baltimore three months later.
