It was won by Rice on the strength of a first-quarter touchdown and a safety on a bad snap during a Tennessee quick kick. Rice outgained Tennessee 246–145 and both teams combined for 9 turnovers.[3] The pageantry surrounding the game consisted of a halftime show in which over 10,000 balloons were released and an appearance by Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Howard McCrum Snyder. Eisenhower's group also consisted of his former Aide-de-camp Charles Craig Cannon and Coral Gables Mayor Tom Mayes. Eisenhower claimed publicly to be taking no sides, but was close friends with Tennessee coach General Robert R. Neyland.[2] References1. ^ {{cite journal | title = 'Orange and Rose Too Toughest to Pick' Says Rice | journal = The Miami News | date = January 1, 1947 | first = Grantland | last = Rice | pages = 4B| id = | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=XzkuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=itUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6157,175279&dq=orange+bowl&hl=en | accessdate = July 5, 2012}} {{1946 bowl game navbox}}{{Orange Bowl navbox}}{{Rice Owls bowl game navbox}}{{Tennessee Volunteers bowl game navbox}}2. ^1 {{cite journal | title = 36,152 Thrilled Here By Orange Bowl Show | journal = The Miami News | date = January 2, 1947 | first = Henry | last = Cavendish | pages = 33| id = | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YDkuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=itUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1901,614230&dq=orange+bowl&hl=en | accessdate = July 5, 2012}} 3. ^ {{cite journal | title = Rice Turns Back Tennessee in Orange Bowl Game 8-0 | journal = The Palm Beach Post | date = January 2, 1947 | pages = 9| id = | url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=_wsjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Hc0FAAAAIBAJ&pg=2658,91706&dq=orange+bowl&hl=en}} 6 : 1946–47 NCAA football bowl games|Orange Bowl|Rice Owls football bowl games|Tennessee Volunteers football bowl games|January 1947 sports events|1947 in sports in Florida |
