This was on the same day as other local elections in England and Scotland.[1] The whole council was up for election and the incumbent majority Conservative administration maintained its overall control of the council.[1] This was the first election held in which no aldermen were elected onto the council.[4] Boundary changes also meant that the number of elected seats increased by 3.[1] Background{{See also|Merton London Borough Council elections#1974-1978}}At the last election, the Conservatives had won a majority of three seats on the council, with twenty-nine elected members and four aldermen.[2] They subsequently gained a seat from the Labour Party in a by-election in the ward of Wimbledon South on 19 September 1974 and then lost a seat to the Liberal Party in the ward of Cannon Hill on 30 October 1975.[1] Prior to the election, elected councillors appointed nine aldermen to serve on Merton London Borough Council. This was the first election in which this arrangement ended,[2] as was required by the Local Government Act 1972, which rendered the post merely an honorary title.[1] The Conservatives did not stand in the newly-created ward of Longthornton, leaving the three-member ward as a two-way contest between the Labour Party and the Longthornton and Tamworth Residents Association.[1] ResultsThe Conservatives maintained their overall majority control of the council, increasing their majority to 21 seats.[2] {{Election Summary Begin|title = Merton Local Election Result 1978[1]{{#tag:ref|The Independent vote count includes one candidate who stood under the description of "Theatrical Agent" in Village, winning 169 votes.|group= n}}}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Conservative Party (UK) |government = yes |seats = 39 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = {{increase}}6 |seats % = 68.4% |votes % = 52.6% |votes = 85,773 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Labour Party (UK) |seats = 15 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = {{decrease}}12 |seats % = 26.3% |votes % = 34.7% |votes = 56,501 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Longthornton and Tamworth Residents Association |seats = 3 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = {{steady}} |seats % = 5.3% |votes % = 3.9% |votes = 6,336 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 8.3% |votes = 13,532 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = National Front (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 0.3% |votes = 457 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent (politician) |seats = 0 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 0.2% |votes = 272 |plus/minus = }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Workers Revolutionary Party (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = n/a |loss = n/a |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 0.0% |votes = 74 |plus/minus = }}{{Election box end}} Notes and referencesNotes1. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 7 {{Cite web|url=http://londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1978-5-4.pdf|title=London Borough Council Elections 4 May 1978|date=1978|publisher=Greater London Council|deadurl=|accessdate=20 June 2018}} References{{reflist}}{{London elections}}{{Greater London elections}}{{United Kingdom local elections, 1978}}2. ^1 2 3 {{Cite web|url=https://www2.merton.gov.uk/results_summary_locals_from_1964.pdf|title=London Borough of Merton Results Summary 1964-2012|date=|publisher=Merton Electoral Services|deadurl=|accessdate=20 June 2018}} 3 : Council elections in the London Borough of Merton|1978 London Borough council elections|May 1978 events in Europe |
