The club was managed by John Lyall and the team captain was Billy Bonds. The season started well for West Ham and they went unbeaten in their first nine league games. By the end of the year they sat in 7th place in the league. Four defeats in a row in December and January and a slump in form then occurred and they reached a low position of 14th at the end of February 1982. They finished in 9th place having drawn 10 of their home games and 16 games home and away. David Cross was the top scorer with 20 goals in all competitions and 16 in the league. The next highest scorer was Paul Goddard with 17. Ray Stewart made the most appearances; 51 in all competitions. The season saw the only appearance for West Ham by future Liverpool and Ireland player, Ray Houghton and the last West Ham appearance for 1980 FA Cup Final winner with West Ham, Stuart Pearson.[1][2] First DivisionPos | Team | Pld | | W | D | L | F | A | | W | D | L | F | A | | F | A | GD | | Pts | Notes | 1 | Liverpool | 42 | 14 | 3 | 4 | 39 | 14 | 12 | 6 | 3 | 41 | 18 | 80 | 32 | +48 | 87 | European Cup 1982–83 First round [3] | 2 | Ipswich Town | 42 | 17 | 1 | 3 | 47 | 25 | 9 | 4 | 8 | 28 | 28 | 75 | 53 | +22 | 83 | UEFA Cup 1982–83 First round | 3 | Manchester United | 42 | 12 | 6 | 3 | 27 | 9 | 10 | 6 | 5 | 32 | 20 | 59 | 29 | +30 | 78 | UEFA Cup 1982–83 First round | 4 | Tottenham Hotspur | 42 | 12 | 4 | 5 | 41 | 26 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 26 | 22 | 67 | 48 | +19 | 71 | UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1982–83 First round | 5 | Arsenal | 42 | 13 | 5 | 3 | 27 | 15 | 7 | 6 | 8 | 21 | 22 | 48 | 37 | +11 | 71 | UEFA Cup 1982–83 First round | 6 | Swansea City | 42 | 13 | 3 | 5 | 34 | 16 | 8 | 3 | 10 | 24 | 35 | 58 | 51 | +7 | 69 | UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1982–83 First round [4] | 7 | Southampton | 42 | 15 | 2 | 4 | 49 | 30 | 4 | 7 | 10 | 23 | 37 | 72 | 67 | +5 | 66 | UEFA Cup 1982–83 First round | 8 | Everton | 42 | 11 | 7 | 3 | 33 | 21 | 6 | 6 | 9 | 23 | 29 | 56 | 50 | +6 | 64 | 9 | West Ham United | 42 | 9 | 10 | 2 | 42 | 29 | 5 | 6 | 10 | 24 | 28 | 66 | 57 | +9 | 58 | 10 | Manchester City | 42 | 9 | 7 | 5 | 32 | 23 | 6 | 6 | 9 | 17 | 27 | 49 | 50 | –1 | 58 | 11 | Aston Villa | 42 | 9 | 6 | 6 | 28 | 24 | 6 | 6 | 9 | 27 | 29 | 55 | 53 | +2 | 57 | European Cup 1982–83 First round [5] | 12 | Nottingham Forest | 42 | 7 | 7 | 7 | 19 | 20 | 8 | 5 | 8 | 23 | 28 | 42 | 48 | –6 | 57 | 13 | Brighton & Hove Albion | 42 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 30 | 24 | 5 | 6 | 10 | 13 | 28 | 43 | 52 | –9 | 52 | 14 | Coventry City | 42 | 9 | 4 | 8 | 31 | 24 | 4 | 7 | 10 | 25 | 38 | 56 | 62 | –6 | 50 | 15 | Notts County | 42 | 8 | 5 | 8 | 32 | 33 | 5 | 3 | 13 | 29 | 36 | 61 | 69 | –8 | 47 | 16 | Birmingham City | 42 | 8 | 6 | 7 | 29 | 25 | 2 | 8 | 11 | 24 | 36 | 53 | 61 | –8 | 44 | 17 | West Bromwich Albion | 42 | 6 | 6 | 9 | 24 | 25 | 5 | 5 | 11 | 22 | 32 | 46 | 57 | –11 | 44 | 18 | Stoke City | 42 | 9 | 2 | 10 | 27 | 28 | 3 | 6 | 12 | 17 | 35 | 44 | 63 | –19 | 44 | 19 | Sunderland | 42 | 6 | 5 | 10 | 19 | 26 | 5 | 6 | 10 | 19 | 32 | 38 | 58 | –20 | 44 | 20 | Leeds United | 42 | 6 | 11 | 4 | 23 | 20 | 4 | 1 | 16 | 16 | 41 | 39 | 61 | –22 | 42 | 21 | Wolverhampton Wanderers | 42 | 8 | 5 | 8 | 19 | 20 | 2 | 5 | 14 | 13 | 43 | 32 | 63 | –31 | 40 | 22 | Middlesbrough | 42 | 5 | 9 | 7 | 20 | 24 | 3 | 6 | 12 | 14 | 28 | 34 | 52 | –18 | 39 | P = Matches played; W = Matches won; D = Matches drawn; L = Matches lost; F = Goals for; A = Goals against; GD = Goal difference; Pts = Points1. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.liverpoolfc.com/history/past-players/ray-houghton | title=Ray Houghton | publisher=www.liverpoolfc.com | accessdate=26 March 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.whufc.com/articles/20110402/stuart-pearson_2236884_2369435 | title=Stuart Pearson | publisher=www.whufc.com | accessdate=26 March 2014 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140626042102/http://www.whufc.com/articles/20110402/stuart-pearson_2236884_2369435 | archive-date=26 June 2014 | dead-url=yes | df=dmy-all }} 3. ^Liverpool were also this season's League Cup Winners. 4. ^Swansea City qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup as 1982 Welsh Cup winners. 5. ^Aston Villa won the European Cup this year, and thus qualified for the following season's competition as defending champions. 6. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.westhamstats.info/westham.php?west=4&ham=1982&united=1st_Division_1981-82| title=Welcome to the Wonderful World of West Ham United Statistics - 1st Division 1981-82 | publisher=www.westhamstats.info | accessdate=26 March 2014}}
