This was on the same day as other local elections in England and Scotland.[1] The whole council was up for election and the incumbent majority Conservative administration remained in overall control of the council, its majority reduced to one seat.[1] Background{{See also|Merton local elections#1982-1986}}At the last election, the Conservatives had remained in overall majority control of the council, winning 44 seats. The Labour Party was returned as the only opposition party, with 13 seats.[1] In the same election, Longthornton and Tamworth Residents Association lost all their three seats to the Conservatives.[2]Following the death of Cllr. Michael Page, at a by-election in Longthornton on 15 March 1984, the Longthornton and Tamworth Residents Association regained one of their seats from the Conservatives.[2] Results{{Election Summary Begin|title = Merton Local Election Result 1986[1]{{#tag:ref|The Liberal Democrat vote count includes two candidates who stood under the description of "Liberal Alliance Focus Team" in Durnsford.|group= n}}{{#tag:ref|The Independent vote count includes one candidate who stood under the description of "Independent Labour" in Longthornton, winning 146 votes.|group= n}}}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Conservative Party (UK) |government = yes |seats = 29 |gain = 0 |loss = 15 |net = {{decrease}}15 |seats % = 50.9% |votes % = 41.1% |votes = 69,161 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}10.1% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Labour Party (UK) |seats = 25 |gain = 12 |loss = 0 |net = {{increase}}12 |seats % = 43.9% |votes % = 35.7% |votes = 59,974 |plus/minus = {{increase}}10.3% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Longthornton and Tamworth Residents Association |seats = 3 |gain = 3 |loss = 0 |net = {{increase}}3 |seats % = 5.3% |votes % = 2.3% |votes = 3,919 |plus/minus = {{increase}}0.8% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = SDP-Liberal Alliance |seats = 3 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 20.4% |votes = 34,325 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}1.1% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independent (politician) |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0% |votes % = 0.4% |votes = 630 |plus/minus = n/a }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = National Front (UK) |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0 |votes % = 0.1% |votes = 154 |plus/minus = {{steady}} }}{{Election box end}} In Durnsford, incumbent Conservative councillor and future Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May was elected for the Conservative Party. :{{Election box begin | title= Durnsford (2)[3]}} {{Election box candidate with party link||party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidate = Geoffrey Gill |votes = 857 |percentage = {{percent|1,675|4,562|1|pad=yes}} |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidate = Theresa May |votes = 818 |percentage = |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Arthur Kennedy |votes = 734 |percentage = {{percent|1,464|4,562|1|pad=yes}} |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Susan Knibbs |votes = 731 |percentage = {{percent|1,423|4,562|1|pad=yes}} |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Anthony Coleman |votes = 730 |percentage = |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Richard Barraclough |votes = 692 |percentage = |change = }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 4,562 |percentage = |change = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Conservative Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Conservative Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box end}} Notes and referencesNotes1. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www2.merton.gov.uk/results_summary_locals_from_1964.pdf|title=Merton Council Election Results 1964-2012|last=|first=|date=|website=Merton Council|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=9 June 2018}} References{{reflist}}{{London elections}}{{Greater London elections}}{{United Kingdom local elections, 1986}}{{England-election-stub}}2. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=http://londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1982-5-6.pdf|title=London Borough Council Elections 6 May 1982|date=1982|publisher=Greater London Council|deadurl=|accessdate=20 June 2018}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{Cite book|url=http://londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1986-5-8.pdf|title=London Borough Council Elections 8 May 1986|last=|first=|publisher=London Residuary Body - Research and Intelligence Unit|year=1986|isbn=|location=|}} 2 : Council elections in the London Borough of Merton|1986 London Borough council elections |
