Voters chose four representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Maine was won by Governor Bill Clinton (D-Arkansas) with 38.77 percent of the popular vote over businessman Ross Perot (I-Texas) with 30.44 percent. Incumbent President George H. W. Bush (R-Texas) finished in third, close behind Perot, with 30.39 percent of the popular vote.[1] Despite the Bush family having ties to Maine, with Bush owning a house in Kennebunkport, Maine, Perot beat Bush for second place in the state by a slim margin of 316 votes, making Maine one of two states where Perot finished better than third place, the other being Utah,[1] though Maine was the only state of the two where Perot won any counties. Clinton ultimately won the national vote, defeating both incumbent President Bush and Perot.[2]Perot's 30.44% would prove Maine as his strongest state in the 1992 election.[3] Ross Perot came within five percent of winning one electoral vote from Maine’s second congressional district, the closest he came to winning an electoral vote in 1992. Clinton was the first Democrat to win any county in Maine since Jimmy Carter in 1980, the first to win Kennebec County and York County since Carter in 1976, the first to carry the counties of Franklin, Oxford, Penobscot, Sagadahoc and Washington since Hubert Humphrey and Maine favorite son Edmund Muskie did so in 1968, and the first to carry Hancock, Knox and Lincoln Counties since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.[4] Results
