It concluded on 24 April 2001 with the final. Linfield were the defending champions after their third consecutive and sixth overall League Cup win last season; a 4–0 victory over Coleraine in the previous final. This season they went out in the semi-finals to Glenavon, who condemned Linfield to their first defeat in the competition for four years. Glentoran were the eventual winners, defeating Glenavon 1–0 in the final to lift the cup for the third time overall, and the first time since the 1990–91 competition 10 years earlier.[1][2]Preliminary round{{OneLegStart}}{{OneLegResult|Carrick Rangers||1–0|Ballyclare Comrades}}{{OneLegResult|Dungannon Swifts||0–3|Limavady United}}{{OneLegResult|Larne||2–0|Bangor}}{{OneLegResult|Lisburn Distillery||0–2|Ards}}|} First round{{OneLegStart}}{{OneLegResult|Armagh City||0–0 (4–3 p)|Coleraine}}{{OneLegResult|Ballymena United||1–2|Ards}}{{OneLegResult|Carrick Rangers||0–2|Glenavon}}{{OneLegResult|Cliftonville||2–3|Omagh Town}}{{OneLegResult|Crusaders||1–2|Linfield}}{{OneLegResult|Glentoran||2–1|Limavady United}}{{OneLegResult|Institute||2–2 (1–3 p)|Newry Town}}{{OneLegResult|Larne||0–1|Portadown}}|} Quarter-finals{{OneLegStart}}{{OneLegResult|Ards||0–2|Omagh Town}}{{OneLegResult|Armagh City||0–1|Glentoran}}{{OneLegResult|Glenavon||3–0|Portadown}}{{OneLegResult|Newry Town||0–0 (3–4 p)|Linfield}}|} Semi-finals{{OneLegStart}}{{OneLegResult|Omagh Town||0–2|Glentoran}}{{OneLegResult|Linfield||0–1|Glenavon}}|} Final{{footballbox|date=24 April 2001 |time= |team1=Glenavon |score=0 – 1 |aet= |report=Report |team2=Glentoran |goals1= |goals2=Young {{goal|73|pen.}} |stadium=Windsor Park, Belfast |attendance= |referee= }} References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rsssf.com/tablesn/nilleagcuphist.html|title=Northern Ireland - List of League Cup Finals|work=Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation|publisher=rsssf.com|accessdate=24 December 2012}} {{Irish League Cup seasons}}{{Football in Northern Ireland}}{{2000–01 in European Football (UEFA)}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Irish League Cup 2000-01}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rsssf.com/tablesn/nilleagcup01.html|title=Northern Ireland League Cup 2000/01|work=Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation|publisher=rsssf.com|accessdate=24 December 2012}} 3 : 2000–01 in Northern Ireland association football|2000–01 domestic association football cups|Irish League Cup seasons |
