In their second year under head coach Jeff Tedford, the Golden Bears compiled an 8–6 record (5–3 against Pac-10 opponents), finished in a tie for third place in the Pac-10, and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 457 to 341.[1][2] The team was led by a junior college transfer student Aaron Rodgers who was named the starting quarterback in the fifth game of the season, against Illinois.[3] In his second start, Rodgers led the team to a 21–7 halftime lead against USC (then ranked No. 3) before being replaced due to injury in the second half by Reggie Robertson.[4] The Bears won in triple overtime, 34–31.[5] Cal defeated Virginia Tech, 52–49, in the 2003 Insight Bowl, as Rodgers passed for 394 yards and was named game MVP. During the 2003 season, Rodgers tied a Cal season record with five 300-yard games and set a Cal record for the lowest percentage of passes intercepted at 1.43%.[6] The team's statistical leaders included Rodgers with 2,903 passing yards, Adimchinobe Echemandu with 1,195 rushing yards, and Geoff McArthur with 1,504 receiving yards.[7] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 2003 | poll = AP | timezone = Pacific |{{CFB schedule entry | date = August 23 | time = 6:45 p.m. | w/l = l | nonconf = y | neutral = y | opponent = Kansas State | opprank = 7 | gamename = BCA Classic | site_stadium = Arrowhead Stadium | site_cityst = Kansas City, MO | tv = ESPN | score = 28–42 | attend = 50,823 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = August 30 | time = 1:00 p.m. | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Southern Miss | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = HDNet | score = 34–2 | attend = 33,552 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 6 | time = 3:00 p.m. | w/l = l | nonconf = y | opponent = Colorado State | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = FSN | score = 21–23 | attend = 34,096 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 11 | time = 4:45 p.m. | w/l = l | nonconf = y | away = y | opponent = Utah | site_stadium = Rice-Eccles Stadium | site_cityst = Salt Lake City, UT | tv = ESPN | score = 24–31 | attend = 46,768 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 20 | time = 9:00 a.m. | w/l = w | nonconf = y | away = y | opponent = Illinois | site_stadium = Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Champaign, IL | tv = ESPN+ | score = 31–24 | attend = 58,363 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 27 | time = 3:30 p.m. | w/l = w | opponent = USC | opprank = 3 | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = FSN | score = 34–31 | overtime = 3OT | attend = 51,208 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 4 | time = 2:00 p.m. | w/l = l | opponent = Oregon State | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = | score = 21–35 | attend = 39,150 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 18 | time = 12:30 p.m. | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = UCLA | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Rose Bowl | site_cityst = Pasadena, CA | tv = ABC | score = 20–23 | overtime = OT | attend = 53,825 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 25 | time = 12:30 p.m. | w/l = w | opponent = Arizona | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = | score = 42–14 | attend = 33,249 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 1 | time = 12:30 p.m. | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Arizona State | site_stadium = Sun Devil Stadium | site_cityst = Tempe, AZ | tv = | score = 51–23 | attend = 48,452 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 8 | time = 7:00 p.m. | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = Oregon | site_stadium = Autzen Stadium | site_cityst = Eugene, OR | tv = TBS | score = 17–21 | attend = 57,511 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 15 | time = 12:30 p.m. | w/l = w | opponent = Washington | site_stadium = California Memorial Stadium | site_cityst = Berkeley, CA | tv = | score = 54–7 | attend = 38,576 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 22 | time = 12:30 p.m. | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Stanford | gamename = The Big Game | site_stadium = Stanford Stadium | site_cityst = Stanford, CA | tv = ABC | score = 28–16 | attend = 67,950 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = December 26 | time = 5:00 p.m. | w/l = w | nonconf = y | neutral = y | opponent = Virginia Tech | gamename = Insight Bowl | site_stadium = Bank One Ballpark | site_cityst = Phoenix, AZ | tv = ESPN | score = 52–49 | attend = 42,364 }} }}[8] Game summariesUSC{{AFB game box start|Title=#3 USC at California |Visitor=USC |V1= 7|V2=0 |V3=14 |V4=3 |VOT=0 |VOT2=7 |VOT3=0 |Host=California |H1= 7|H2=14 |H3=0 |H4=3 |HOT=0 |HOT2=7 |HOT3=3 |Date=September 27 |Location=California Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, California |StartTime=6:30 p.m. |TimeZone=EST |ElapsedTime= |Attendance= |Weather= |Referee= |TVAnnouncers= |TVStation= }}
