Playing as a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Eastern Division, the team was led by head coach Phillip Fulmer, in his thirteenth full year, and played their home games at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. They finished the season with a record of five wins and six losses (5–6 overall, 3–5 in the SEC), and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time during Fulmer's tenure as head coach and the first time overall since 1988. Tennessee entered their 2005 season ranked as the number three team in the nation and as a favorite to win the Eastern Division and compete for the SEC championship.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 2005 | poll = AP | timezone = Eastern |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 3 | time = 12:30 PM | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = 3 | opponent = UAB | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee | tv = JPS | score = 17–10 | attend = 107,529 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 17 | time = 8:00 PM | w/l = l | away = y | rank = 5 | opponent = Florida | opprank = 6 | gamename = Third Saturday in September | site_stadium = Ben Hill Griffin Stadium | site_cityst = Gainesville, Florida | tv = CBS | score = 7–16 | attend = 90,716 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 26 | time = 7:30 PM | w/l = w | away = y | rank = 10 | opponent = LSU | opprank = 4 | site_stadium = Tiger Stadium | site_cityst = Baton Rouge, Louisiana | tv = ESPN2 | score = 30–27 | overtime = OT | attend = 91,986 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 1 | time = 12:30 PM | w/l = w | rank = 10 | opponent = Ole Miss | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee | tv = JPS | score = 27–10 | attend = 107,709 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 8 | time = 3:30 PM | w/l = l | rank = 8 | opponent = Georgia | opprank = 5 | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee (Rivalry) | tv = CBS | score = 14–27 | attend = 108,470 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 22 | time = 3:30 PM | w/l = l | away = y | rank = 17 | opponent = Alabama | opprank = 5 | gamename = Third Saturday in October | site_stadium = Bryant–Denny Stadium | site_cityst = Tuscaloosa, Alabama | tv = CBS | score = 3–6 {{double-dagger}} | attend = 81,018 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 29 | time = 7:45 PM | w/l = l | rank = 23 | opponent = South Carolina | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee | tv = ESPN2 | score = 15–16 | attend = 107,716 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 5 | time = 2:30 PM | w/l = l | nonconf = y | away = y | rank = | opponent = Notre Dame | opprank = 8 | site_stadium = Notre Dame Stadium | site_cityst = Notre Dame, Indiana | tv = NBC | score = 21–41 | attend = 80,795 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 12 | time = 2:00 PM | w/l = w | nonconf = y | homecoming = y | rank = | opponent = Memphis | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee | tv = PPV | score = 20–16 | attend = 106,647 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 19 | time = 12:30 PM | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Vanderbilt | site_stadium = Neyland Stadium | site_cityst = Knoxville, Tennessee (Rivalry) | tv = JPS | score = 24–28 | attend = 107,487 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 26 | time = 12:30 PM | w/l = w | away = y | rank = | opponent = Kentucky | gamename = Battle for the Barrel | site_stadium = Commonwealth Stadium | site_cityst = Lexington, Kentucky | tv = JPS | score = 28–7 | attend = 61,924 }} }}[3][4]
