It ran alongside the 2011–12 Top 14 competition; both competitions are operated by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR). Grenoble claimed the automatic promotion spot as league champions, and Mont-de-Marsan earned the second promotion spot by winning a playoff among the next four teams. Béziers and Périgueux finished in the two bottom spots, which would normally lead to automatic relegation to Fédérale 1. However, Béziers were spared the drop when Bourgoin were forcibly relegated to Fédérale 1 for financial reasons.[1]Teams{{Location map+ |France |width=350 |float=right |caption=Location of teams in Rugby Pro D2 2011–12 |places={{Location map~ |France |lat=43.53 |long=5.45 |label=Aix-en-Provence|position=right }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.93 |long=2.15 |label=Albi }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.65 |long=0.59 |label=Auch |position=top }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=44.93 |long=2.44 |label=Aurillac }}{{location map~ |France |lat=45.58961 |long=5.28764 |label=Bourgoin|position=right}}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.21 |long=2.35 |label=Carcassonne |position=bottom }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.18 |long=3.00 |label=Narbonne }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.71 |long=-1.06 |label=Dax |position=left }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=45.18 |long=5.73 |label=Grenoble |position=bottom }}{{location map~ |France |lat=46.059444 |long=-1.151389 |label=La Rochelle}}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.90 |long=-0.51 |label=Mt-de-Marsan |position=left }}{{location map~ |France |lat=43.33472 |long=3.26611 |label=Béziers|position=left|}}{{Location map~ |France |lat=46.26 |long=5.66 |label=Oyonnax |position=top }}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.30 |long=-0.37 |label=Pau |position=left }}{{location map~ |France |lat=45.19164 |long=0.70002 |label=Périgueux|position=left}}{{Location map~ |France |lat=43.23 |long=0.07 |label=Tarbes }}}}
Competition formatThe top team at the end of the regular season (after all the teams played one another twice, once at home, once away), is declared champion and earns a spot in the next Top 14 season. Teams ranked second to fifth compete in promotion playoffs, with the semifinals being played at the home ground of the higher-ranked team. The final is then played on neutral ground, and the winner earned the second ticket to the next Top 14. The LNR uses a slightly different bonus points system from that used in most other rugby competitions. It trialled a new system in 2007–08 explicitly designed to prevent a losing team from earning more than one bonus point in a match,[2] a system that also made it impossible for either team to earn a bonus point in a drawn match. LNR chose to continue with this system for subsequent seasons.[3] France's bonus point system operates as follows:[3]
