There were 28 seats up for election, one third of the council. The last election in 2011 gave Labour a majority over the Liberal Democrats with 49 Councillors. However one Independent Councillor joined Labour after the election giving the party 50 seats.[2] Four main parties fielded a full slate of 28 candidates. UKIP were also to put up a full slate, but Steve Moxon was deselected as the party's candidate for Dore and Totley.[3] Labour were defending 12 seats, all of which they successfully held in 2011. The Liberal Democrats were defending 15 seats, 9 of which they lost to Labour in 2011. The Greens were defending 1 seat, which they held in 2011. The Conservatives, UKIP and the smaller parties had no councillors. {{Election Summary Begin|title = Sheffield City Council Election, 2012}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Labour Party (UK) |candidates = 28 |seats = 21 |gain = 9 |loss = 0 |net = {{increase}}9 |seats % = 75.0 |votes % = 46.9 |votes = 61,036 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}1.7 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Liberal Democrats (UK) |candidates = 28 |seats = 6 |gain = 0 |loss = 8 |net = {{decrease}}9 |seats % = 21.4 |votes % = 22.0 |votes = 28,591 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}3.4 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = UK Independence Party |candidates = 28 |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 10.5 |votes = 13,612 |plus/minus = {{increase}}8.7 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Green Party of England and Wales |candidates = 28 |seats = 1 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 3.6 |votes % = 10.4 |votes = 13,607 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}0.8 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidates = 28 |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 8.2 |votes = 10,729 |plus/minus = {{decrease}}3.4 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition |candidates = 5 |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 1.0 |votes = 1,266 |plus/minus = {{increase}}0.2 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Independents |candidates = 3 |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 0.9 |votes = 1,222 |plus/minus = {{increase}}0.7 }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = English Democrats Party |candidates = 1 |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = {{steady}}0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 0.1 |votes = 174 |plus/minus = {{increase}}0.1 }}{{Election box end}} This result has the following consequences for the total number of seats on the Council after the elections:
