Due to start in December, numerous delays and challenges to the board pushed the opening weekend back to February, and then pushed to March 9. There was a season-opening Super Four tournament won by Heartland F.C. between the four clubs involved in Continental competitions in order to get them ready for their international assignments.[1] ClubsSixteen teams from the previous season and four teams promoted from the Nigeria National League (Bayelsa United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Nasarawa United and Nembe City F.C.) participated in this season. {{location map+ |Nigeria |float=left |width=480 |caption=Locations of the Nigeria Premier League 2012–13 teams |places={{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=11.99 |long=8.52 |label= Kano Pillars |position=right}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=4.77 |long=7.02 |label= Dolphins |position=right}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=7.258 |long=5.189722 |label= Sunshine Stars |position=top}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=5.51 |long=5.75 |label= W.Wolves |position=left}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=6.44 |long=7.50 |label= Enugu Rangers |position=top}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=5.102 |long=7.375833 |label= Enyimba |position=left}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=5.4839 |long=7.043889 |label= Heartland |position=right}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=4.76 |long=7.02 |label= Sharks |position=bottom}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=7.4|long=3.91|label= 3SC |position=left}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=5.02 |long=7.925 |label= Akwa United |position=right}}{{location map~ |Nigeria |lat=10.32 |long=9.835 |label= W.
