Prior to the by-election, the governing Labour Party held exactly half the Assembly seats, meaning a gain for that party (who have held the equivalent seat in the House of Commons since 2001) would have given the Welsh government a two-seat majority. ElectionSix candidates were nominated for the election.[3][4][5] {{Election box begin|title=Ynys Môn by-election, 2013}}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate=Rhun ap Iorwerth |votes= 12,601 |percentage= 58.24 |change= +16.8 |party=Plaid Cymru }}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate=Tal Michael |votes= 3,435 |percentage= 15.88 |change= -10.3 |party= Welsh Labour }}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate = Nathan Gill |votes = 3,099 |percentage = 14.32 |change = N/A |party = UK Independence Party }}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate = Neil Fairlamb |votes= 1,843 |change= -20.7 |percentage= 8.52 |party = Welsh Conservative Party }}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate=Kathrine Jones |votes= 348 |percentage= 1.61 |change= N/A |party= Socialist Labour Party (UK) }}{{Election box candidate with party link||candidate = Stephen Churchman |votes= 309 |change= -1.8 |percentage= 1.43 |party = Welsh Liberal Democrats }}{{Election box majority|change= +30.3% |percentage= 42.4 |votes= 9,166 }}{{Election box turnout|change= |percentage= 42.4 |votes= 21,635 }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Plaid Cymru |swing = +13.58% }}{{Election box end}} Previous result{{Election box begin ||title=Welsh Assembly Election 2011: Ynys Môn[6] }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Plaid Cymru |candidate = Ieuan Wyn Jones |votes = 9,969 |percentage = 41.4 |change = +1.7 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Welsh Conservative Party |candidate = Paul Williams |votes = 7,032 |percentage = 29.2 |change = +16.2 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Welsh Labour |candidate = Joe Lock |votes = 6,307 |percentage = 26.2 |change = +8.8 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Welsh Liberal Democrats |candidate = Rhys Taylor |votes = 759 |percentage = 3.2 |change = −0.2 }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 2,937 |percentage = 12.2 |change = }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 24,067 |percentage = 48.6 |change = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Plaid Cymru |swing = −7.3 }}{{Election box end}} References1. ^https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-23072242 {{DEFAULTSORT:Ynys Mon by-election, 2013}}2. ^http://www.assemblywales.org/newhome/new-news-fourth-assembly.htm?act=dis&id=247249&ds=6/2013 3. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-23182533 |title=Ynys Mon by-election: Six names put forward for poll |publisher=BBC News online |date=5 July 2013}} 4. ^http://www.ynysmon.gov.uk/Journals/2013/07/08/v/d/u/Datganiad_am_personau_a_enebwyd.pdf 5. ^{{cite news |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-23545120 |title=Plaid's Anglesey win 'energising' for party, says Rhun ap Iorwerth |publisher=BBC News online |date=2 August 2013}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/election2011/constituency/html/26704.stm |title=Wales elections |date=6 May 2011 |work=BBC News |publisher=BBC |accessdate=6 May 2011}} 5 : By-elections to the National Assembly for Wales|2013 elections in the United Kingdom|2013 in Wales|History of Anglesey|Politics of Anglesey |
