As they got there, they stormed the village from two different directions. They first began shooting men. Just before the shooting, the attackers yelled the words "Allahu akbar", which translates to "God is great".[1][2] Soon after, they began heading for women and children. The gunmen burned down half the village with petrol bombs. The gunmen took women and children residing in the village away in their trucks.[3] AftermathDespite the kidnapping and killings happening on 13 December, the news did not break out until 17 December because the gunmen destroyed communication towers in the area. News of this event emerged when survivors from the village arrived in the city of Maiduguri, where they were able to communicate to others the news of what had happened.[4] Military OffensiveIn April 2015 the Nigerian military rescued a large number of Boko Haram hostages from the Sambisa Forest, including many of those who had been kidnapped from Gumsuri.[5] The survivors reported that some of the women and children had died during over their months of captivity; others were killed during the military operation.[5] ReactionThe United States commented on the kidnapping, stating, “We abhor such violence, which continues to take a terrible toll on the people of Nigeria, and we extend our condolences to the victims and their families."[6] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Suspected Islamic Extremists Kidnap 185 in Northeast Nigeria|url=http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/suspected-islamic-extremists-kidnap-185-northeast-nigeria-27691026|publisher=ABC News|accessdate=19 December 2014}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Gumsuri kidnappings}}2. ^1 {{cite web|title=Boko Haram Suspected in Kidnapping of 172 Women, Children in Nigeria|url=http://www.newsweek.com/boko-haram-suspected-kidnapping-172-women-children-nigeria-293358|publisher=Reuters via Newsweek|accessdate=19 December 2014}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Abubakr|first1=Aminu|last2=Brumfield|first2=Ben|title=Officials: Boko Haram kidnaps 185 women and children, kills 32 people|url=http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/18/world/africa/nigeria-boko-haram-kidnapping/|publisher=CNN|accessdate=19 December 2014}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|title=Boko Haram suspected of kidnapping at least 185 women, children in Nigeria|url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/boko-haram-suspected-of-kidnapping-at-least-185-women-children-in-nigeria-1.2877408|publisher=Associated Press via CBC|accessdate=19 December 2014}} 5. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-32574777|title=Boko Haram freed Nigerian women tell of captivity horror|last=|first=|date=4 May 2015|website=BBC News|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=16 March 2019}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=United States Condemns Suspected Boko Haram Attack In Gumsuri|url=http://www.channelstv.com/2014/12/19/united-states-condemns-suspected-boko-haram-attack-gumsuri/|publisher=Channels Television|accessdate=19 December 2014}} 10 : Mass murder in 2014|Kidnappings by Islamists|Boko Haram attacks|Terrorist incidents in Nigeria in 2014|Attacks in Nigeria in 2014|Kidnapped Nigerian children|Violence against women in Africa|Kidnappings in Nigeria|Islamic terrorist incidents in 2014|December 2014 events |
