"Objects in Motion" is an episode from the fifth season of the science fiction television series Babylon 5.

Synopsis

Lise is still helping Garibaldi get over his drinking problem, with plans for him to leave with her when she returns to Mars. The Alliance's ally, Number One of the Mars resistance and currently part of the Mars Free Colony government, arrives on Babylon 5 to warn both Garibaldi and Lise about a potential assassination attempt against them for secrets related to Edgars' company; Number One has heard there may be people that do not want Lise prying into the company's past records, and even moreso with Garibaldi. Speaking with Sheridan and revealing that Garibaldi has planned to leave the station, they arrange unmarked quarters for the two to stay, and Sheridan plans to arrange a trap for the assassin by having a farewell celebration for both G'Kar and Garibaldi. Separately, Sheridan tells Number One he has an idea, but needs to think about it for a few days and asks her to stay. She spends time with Franklin, who she came to know when had previously come to Mars.

Meanwhile, G'Kar prepares to depart, but finds his follows angry at his choice to abandon one. One Narn is bitter that he spent all his money to come to the station to just have him walk away from him. G'Kar has a heart-to-heart with Sheridan, knowing this is likely the last time they will see each other, but reminds Sheridan that their past conversations will still echoes in the halls of the station.

A security officer is killed by the assassin, who takes his Link and reprograms it so he can listen in on the security channel and learns of the plans for the farewell ceremony. On investigating the officer's death, Zach finds that the Link had been stolen. They use this knowledge to identify the assassin during the ceremony before he can fire on Garibaldi by sending white noise through the Link. However, the Narn that G'Kar had walked away from attempts to assassinate G'Kar. Zach pushes G'Kar away but the shot hits Lise in her shoulder, and she is rushed to medlab. Though she is out for some time and wakes up to a great deal of pain, she is otherwise okay. Garibaldi convinces her that they should get married that moment, not knowing what life will bring before they can leave the station.

Garibaldi convinces Zach to let him see the assassin, whom he takes to Lyta, who is still in the brig, awaiting G'Kar's departure. Garibaldi gets Lyta to agree to scan the assassin's mind to find who gave him the order to go after Garibaldi, and she finds that it was the entire board of Edgars' company, acting in unison as to be able to divest any blame should he be discovered. While Lyta's scan is not usable as evidence, he uses it to dig up scandalous material with the help of Number One, who Sheridan has made the new head of the Alliance's covert operations. Garibaldi and Number One contact the board, listing out what they know, and through Number One's new position, knows even more that would devestate them. Garibaldi offers them an out by having them resign from the board, given that he now has that ability as husband to Lise, who owns the company.

Franklin and Number One have one last meeting before her official duties begin, and decide to have one last night together before they need to go their separate ways. G'Kar and Lyta depart with little pomp. As Garibaldi and Lise' ship is about to leave, Delenn returns to the station and meets with Sheridan. Garibaldi thanks them both as well as the other staff, as he has come to consider them as family, and then departs. Delenn, knowing that she and Sheridan will also likely be leaving for Minbar in the next few weeks to take residence in the new Alliance headquarters, suggests that she and Sheridan walk the full length of the station at least once.

Quotes

G'Kar: I believe when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we have gone our voices will linger in these walls, for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going, very much will miss the part of you that is staying.
