Scripps Company. The winner was 14-year-old Robin Kral of Lamesa, Texas with the word "macerate".[1] Second place went to 13-year-old Lauren H. Pringle of Buffalo, New York. Kral first had a chance to win when Pringle misspelled "polyonymous", but also misspelled it. Pringle then missed "garnett", which Kral correctly spelled, followed by "macerate" for the win.[1][2] There were 79 contestants this year, 47 girls and 32 boys. 533 words were used.[3] Barrie Trinkle of Texas placed fifth this year (falling on "allograph"), and won the next year.[4][5] References1. ^1 2 {{cite news |first=Ray |last=Glass |title=W-I-N-N-E-R |url=http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/031301/edu_031301010.shtml |work=Lubbock Avalanche-Journal |publisher=Morris Communications |location=Lubbock, Texas |date=March 13, 2001 |accessdate=March 6, 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080603160610/http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/031301/edu_031301010.shtml |archive-date=2008-06-03 |dead-url=yes |df= }} {{Scripps National Spelling Bee}}{{WashingtonDC-stub}}2. ^(20 July 2014).
