[1] The regiment was raised on 1 March 1977 by Lt Col N.S. Malik at Ahmednagar. It is an all India mixed-class regiment which was initially equipped with T-55 tanks.[1] During 1984 the regiment was involved in Operation Blue Star from 6 August to 9 September. It later participated in Exercise Brasstacks/Operation Trident.[1] The first Risaldar Major of the regiment, Mohammed Ayub Khan, Vir Chakra, formerly of the 18th Cavalry, after retirement became a prominent politician in Rajasthan.[1] Cap badgeThe regiment initially had a cap badge consisting of crossed lances with pennons, the Ashoka Lions above and the numeral "86" inscribed on the crossing of the lances. It was amended in 1990. The Ashoka Lions emblem was replaced with the "mailed fist" or gauntlet.
