}}Abbas Rajabifard (in Persian عباس رجبی فرد) (born August 23, 1966) is a professor and the head of the Department of Infrastructure Engineering in the Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also the director of the Center for Spatial Data Infrastructures and Land Administration (CSDILA).[1]

Education

Rajabifard received his Bachelor of Science (Surveying Engineering) from Khaje Nassireddin Toussi University in Teheran, Iran, in 1990. Later, he furthered his studies at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Science (ITC) in Enschede, Netherlands. There, he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Production Photogrammetry in 1992 and a Master of Science in Integrated Maps and Geoinformation Production in 1993, both with high distinction.

Rajabifard conducted his PhD research at the University of Melbourne and gained his doctorate in Geomatics-Spatial Data Infrastructure in 2002.

Professional experience

Rajabifard has been actively supervising projects and publishing works since 1993.

2012-present

Aside from his roles as Head of Department at the University of Melbourne and Center Director at CSDILA, Rajabifard is also the organization leader and academic leader of the Australia Disaster Management Platform (ADMP) – a joint research project between the University of Melbourne and IBM. He is also the director of recently established the Centre for Disaster Management and Public Safety (CDMPS) at the University of Melbourne. The CDMPS is focused on conducting multi-disciplinary research and training on disaster management and public safety both nationally and internationally.[2]

He has been a member of Victorian Spatial Council (VSC) since November 2007 and is also a senior research fellow in the University’s Department of Geomatics since 2004.

2005-2012

Rajabifard coordinated research projects, supervised postgraduate projects and also supported research activities with external partners as CSDILA Center Director. In June 2009, he was appointed as the president of Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Association. This society is a leading international association in the development of spatial information and management.

He has been a member of the International Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies (JBGIS) since June 2009 and was a member of the Melbourne School of Engineering Development Committee at the University of Melbourne between October 2009 and October 2010.

Between 2006 and 2008, Rajabifard was the Australian member of ICA-Spatial Data Standards Commission. He was nominated by the Executive Board of the Mapping Sciences Institute, Australia.

From 2002 till 2006, he steered the UN-Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific.

1993-2005

From 1993 till 1998, Rajabifard was a member of National Spatial Data Committee of Standard Organization in Iran where he played a role in defining Iran’s national standard in digital spatial data.

In 1994, he was invited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Iran to partake in a curriculum update of an undergraduate surveying course relating to emerging mapping technology. He was also one of the founders of the first Master of Science course in the Department of Surveying in Khaje Nassireddin Toussi University in Tehran, Iran.

In years between 1994 and 1999, he represented Iran as an executive board member in the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific (PCGIAP). He was also in charge of several Base-map projects and has supervised many GIS application projects at local, state and national levels in Iran.

Upon receiving his doctorate in Geomatics-Spatial Data Infrastructure from the University of Melbourne, Rajabifard has actively supervised numerous postgraduate and graduate research projects.

Between July 2004 and June 2005, he was the project leader in Cooperative Research Center for Spatial Information (CRCSI).
