}}Abdul Baset al-Sarout ({{lang-ar|عبد الباسط الساروت}}) is a former Syrian association football goalkeeper. He represented Syria at the U-17 and U-20 level. During the Siege of Homs from 2011-14, he became a Syrian rebel {{clarify|date=August 2017}} commander.[2] The Arab-speaking media network Al Jazeera described him as a "well known icon in the Syrian uprising".[3] All four of his brothers were killed by Syrian security forces. His uncle, Mohe Edden al-Sarout, was killed during November 2011 in Homs.[4] Al-Sarout survived at least three assassination attempts during his role as a rebel commander. During one attempt, 50 fighters from his unit, the Bayada Martyrs' Brigade, were killed.[1] He was featured in the 2013 war documentary The Return to Homs.[5] In November 2015, al-Sarout and the Bayada Martyrs' Brigade came into conflict with al-Qaeda's al-Nusra Front. Nusra attacked Sarout and his fighters over a claim that Sarout has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. [6] On 29 May 2017, Sarout was arrested by Tahrir al-Sham after being accused of participating in an anti-HTS protest in Maarat al-Nu'man.[7] He was released on 24 June and charges against him dropped.[8] References1. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://en.zamanalwsl.net/news/5393.html|title=Document: rebel commander robs 2.3 Million $ allocated to break Homs Siege|work=Zaman al-Wasl|date=16 June 2014}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=London 2012 Olympics: Syrian goalkeeper takes a stand in Homs as national side aim for Olympics|url=http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/jmagnay1/100024280/london-2012-olympics-syrian-goalkeeper-makes-a-stand-in-homs-as-national-side-aim-for-olympics/|publisher=Telegraph|accessdate=15 March 2012|date=13 March 2012}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Abdul Baset Al Sarout Live Blog|url=http://blogs.aljazeera.net/liveblog/Abdul-Baset-Al-Sarout|publisher=AlJazeera.net|accessdate=15 March 2012|year=2012}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Syria reacts to Arab League suspension - Sunday 13 November 2011|url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/middle-east-live/2011/nov/13/syria-reacts-after-arab-league-suspension|publisher=Guardian|accessdate=16 March 2012|date=13 November 2011}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=The Return To Homs|url=http://www.returntohoms.com|publisher=Proaction/Ventana Films|accessdate=16 August 2015|date=20 November 2013}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://syriadirect.org/news/nusra-turns-guns-on-rebels-in-effort-to-capture-%E2%80%98only-corridor%E2%80%99-into-blockaded-north-homs|title=Nusra turns guns on rebels in effort to capture ‘only corridor’ into blockaded north Homs|work=Syria Direct|date=4 November 2015}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://aletihadpress.com/2017/05/30/%D8%AC%D8%A8%D9%87%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D8%B5%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%AA%D9%82%D9%84-%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%B7-%D8%B3%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%AA-%D8%A8%D8%AA%D9%87/|title=Front victory arrest Abdul Baset Al-Sarout on charges of incitement|work=Al Etihad Press|date=30 May 2017}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.enabbaladi.net/archives/157853|title="Edit Sham" acquits Abdel Basset Alsarut|work=Enab Baladi|date=24 June 2017}} External links
