He competed for Guyana at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul under the name Adrian Carew before representing Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics.[1] Amateur careerDodson's first Olympic appearance came as a 17-year-old competing in the light welterweight division. He won his first two fights against Bilal el-Masri of Libya and Vukašin Dobrašinović of Yugoslavia before losing to eventual bronze medallist Reiner Gies of West Germany in the third round.[2] In 1989 he competed in the 147-pound division of Golden Gloves and won the Sugar Ray Robinson award as the outstanding boxer of the tournament.[3] Having moved to England and taken his mother's last name Dodson made his second Olympic appearance competing for Great Britain at the 1992 Games in Barcelona.[3] Due to the prescense of Robin Reid in the team Dodson was forced to drop from his favoured light middleweight to the welterweight division in order to compete.[4] He won in the first round against Masashi Kawakami but lost in the second round to former World Amateur champion Francisc Vaştag of Romania.[5] Reid went on to win a bronze medal.[4] Professional careerAfter turning professional Dodson won his first 18 fights, including winning the WBO inter-continental title and defeating former world champion Lloyd Honeyghan in 1995. He lost to Ronald “Winky” Wright in a world title fight in 1997 but won the IBO super-middleweight title in 2001.[4] In 1999 he was fined £1,000 and banned for 18 months after being found guilty of biting Alain Bonnamie in the last round of their fight for the Commonwealth title.[6] Dodson retired from boxing in 2003 with a record of 25 wins and 6 defeats.[7][8] In 2011 Dodson was scheduled to make a comeback in the super-middleweight division as part of the Prizefighter series, where he could have faced fellow 1992 Olympian Robin Reid.[9] Dodson pulled out before the series as he felt he was not in physical condition to compete and was replaced by Joe Ainscough.[10] {{S-start}}{{S-pre|}}|-{{S-vac | last=Dana Rosenblatt}}{{S-ttl|title=World Super Middleweight Champion IBO recognition |years=March 3, 2001 – December 10, 2001}}{{s-aft | after=Ramon Arturo Britez}}{{S-end}} References1. ^{{cite web|title=Adrian Carew-Dodson|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/ca/adrian-carew-dodson-1.html|publisher=sports-reference.com|accessdate=12 April 2011}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Dodson, Adrian}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Boxing at the 1988 Seoul Summer Games: Men's Light-Welterweight|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/1988/BOX/mens-light-welterweight.html|publisher=sports-reference.com|accessdate=12 April 2011}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|last=Farrell|first=Bill|title=Londoner Seeks Our Crown|url=http://articles.nydailynews.com/1996-03-04/sports/17996472_1_golden-gloves-boxing-american-stock-exchange|accessdate=12 April 2011|newspaper=NY Daily News|date=4 March 1996}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Adrian Dodson to make Prizefighter return|url=http://www.livefight.com/news.php?news_id=1326&y=2011&m=03|work=8 March 2011|publisher=livefight.com|accessdate=12 April 2011}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Boxing at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games: Men's Welterweight|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/1992/BOX/mens-welterweight.html|publisher=sports-reference.com|accessdate=12 April 2011}} 6. ^{{cite news|last=Daley|first=Kieran|title=Dodson banned for biting opponent|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/general/dodson-banned-for-biting-opponent-741336.html|accessdate=12 April 2011|newspaper=The Independent|date=19 October 1999}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Dodson relying on experience|url=http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12183_6802027,00.html|work=8 March 2011|publisher=Sky Sports|accessdate=12 April 2011}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Adrian Dodson career record |url=http://www.britishboxing.net/boxers_9018-Adrian-Dodson.html |publisher=britishboxing.net |accessdate=12 April 2011 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120314144102/http://www.britishboxing.net/boxers_9018-Adrian-Dodson.html |archivedate=14 March 2012 |df= }} 9. ^{{cite news|last=Williams |first=Martin |title=Veterans Adrian Dodson and Robin Reid could face off at Prizefighter |url=http://www.dailypost.co.uk/sport-news/boxing/2011/03/10/veterans-adrian-dodson-and-robin-reid-could-face-off-at-prizefighter-55578-28309619/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120929165654/http://www.dailypost.co.uk/sport-news/boxing/2011/03/10/veterans-adrian-dodson-and-robin-reid-could-face-off-at-prizefighter-55578-28309619/ |dead-url=yes |archive-date=29 September 2012 |accessdate=12 April 2011 |newspaper=Daily Post North Wales |date=10 March 2011 }} 10. ^{{cite web|title=Ainscough Replaces Dodson In Prizefighter|url=http://www.secondsout.com/uk-boxing-news?ccs=228&cs=941214|publisher=secondsout.com|accessdate=12 April 2011}} 12 : 1970 births|Living people|Sportspeople from Georgetown, Guyana|Guyanese male boxers|Welterweight boxers|Boxers at the 1988 Summer Olympics|Olympic boxers of Guyana|Boxers at the 1992 Summer Olympics|Olympic boxers of Great Britain|Guyanese emigrants to England|Black English sportspeople|British male boxers |
