Adrian Mall is an enclosed shopping center serving Adrian, Michigan. It opened in 1970 and features two open anchor stores: Hobby Lobby and Dunham's Sports with two vacant anchors last occupied by Elder-Beerman and J. C. Penney.

History

Adrian Mall opened on September 3, 1970. At the time, the mall included Sears and F.W. Woolworth Company as its anchor stores,[2] with JCPenney opening as the third anchor in April 1971.[3]

In 1985, the mall underwent a $1.5 million renovation,[4] which included the addition of an Elder-Beerman department store.[5]

The mall underwent several ownership changes in the 2000s. General Growth Properties bought it in 2002,[6] CBL & Associates Properties bought it in 2008,[7] and it was sold again to Jones Lang LaSalle in 2010.[8] In December 2014, Texas-based Tabani Group purchased the Adrian Mall for an undisclosed amount.[9] A firm spokesman said it planned to make the mall a premier shopping destination and hoped to form partnerships with area businesses and organizations.[10]

The mall lost several merchants in 2009, including Waldenbooks and one of the last Sam Goody stores.[11] Sears closed in 2012.[12] In 2013, renovations plans were announced which included the conversion of part of the Sears store to a new Hobby Lobby and the expansion of MC Sports existing store.[13] JCPenney also announced the closure of its Adrian Mall store in January 2015.[14] Dunham's Sports took over the former JCPenney wing, which includes the MC Sports store that closed in late 2015. The grand opening of Dunham's Sports was May 20, 2016. Elder-Beerman closed in April 2018 due to Bon-Ton Stores filing for bankruptcy.
