Adventure for Youth (AFY) is a week-long youth program that is offered through Community Connections at Brigham Young University–Idaho. AFY is based on fostering faith-building and life-changing learning, based on the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1] AFY activities include CES instructor devotionals, a temple baptism session, dances, ropes course initiatives, white water rafting, and other activities.[2]

Future of AFY

Due to the increase in the number of students at BYU–Idaho, the Community Connections Department (the department that facilitates AFY) resources are being reassigned to other areas on campus, so AFY will no longer be offered. Previous managers, staff leaders, and counselors have broken off to create a similar program, "Outdoors For Youth, OFY".[3]

AFY activities

AFY is a program that focuses on teaching "For The Strength of Youth" principles through experiential learning. Activities appeal to youth who prefer doing hands on activities.

Mission statement

The purpose of Adventure For Youth (AFY) is to encourage youth to draw closer to the Savior by acting on true principles, participating in adventure activities, and seeking an excellent balance in all things.[4]

Participation at AFY

Youth

Each youth is assigned to a group that they are with every day, for the duration of the week. The purpose of the small groups is to have the youth to grow spiritually, make friends, and set goals on how to become the best person they can be.[5]

Registration is available for youth ages 14–18. AFY is a limited enrollment program that accepts only 96 participants per week-long session. The enrollment is limited because of the adventure itinerary.[2] There are two locations where AFY is offered, the campus BYU–Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho, and the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Counselors

Counselors are typically college aged young adults. AFY is based around the personal interaction that youth are able to have with their counselor. Staff are required to be in good standing in the community and church. Counselors live on-site adjacent to youth apartments for the duration of the program.
