It grows up to {{convert|5|m|-1}} tall with a trunk diameter of up to {{convert|5|cm|0}}. The bark is usually grey and pale brown, sometimes dark brown. The fruits are roundish, up to {{convert|2|cm|in|0|abbr=on}} in diameter. The specific epithet {{lang|la|rufibarbis}} is from the Latin meaning "red beard", referring to the reddish brown hairs of the indumentum. Habitat is mixed dipterocarp forests from {{convert|100|m|-2}} to {{convert|250|m|-2}} altitude.
