CareerRushdi began his career in 1946, working in Egypt's security institutions.[2] He served as the director of Cairo security from 1976 to 1978.[2] Then he became the assistant minister of the interior in 1978. He was appointed interior minister in July 1984, replacing Hassan Abu Basha in the post.[2] Shortly after Rushdi's appointment in November 1984, thousands of students at Cairo's Al Azhar University clashed with anti-riot police, demonstrating for academic reforms and the resignation of him.[3] Rushdi continued to serve as interior minister when Ali Lutfi was appointed prime minister after the resignation of Kamal Hassan Ali on 4 September 1985.[4] Rushdi was one of the most powerful ministers in the cabinet.[7] Rushdi resigned from office on 27 February 1986 due to rebellious activities of the central security forces in Cairo, killing nearly 38 people.[5][6][7] The army restored order in Cairo.[8] Rushdi was replaced by Zaki Badr in the post.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Former interior minister Rushdi passes away at 89|url=http://www.sis.gov.eg/En/Templates/Articles/tmpArticleNews.aspx?ArtID=68806|work=SIS|accessdate=6 September 2013|date=4 July 2013}} {{s-start}}{{s-off}}{{s-bef|before=Hassan Abu Basha}}{{s-ttl|title=Minister of Interior|years=1984 – 1986}}{{s-aft|after=Zaki Badr}}{{s-end}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Rushdi, Ahmed}}2. ^1 2 {{cite news|title=The Opening to the Arabs Characterizes the New Egyptian Cabinet's Policy|url=http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA340546|accessdate=24 December 2012|newspaper=Al Mustaqbal|date=21 July 1984}} 3. ^{{cite web|last=Satloff|first=Robert B.|title=Army and politics in Mubarak's Egypt|url=http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/uploads/Documents/pubs/PolicyPaper10.pdf|publisher=Washington Institute|accessdate=24 December 2012|location=Washington DC|year=2001|format=Policy papers}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=A New Prime Minister Is Appointed in Egypt|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1985/09/05/world/a-new-prime-minister-is-appointed-in-egypt.html|accessdate=24 December 2012|newspaper=The New York Times|date=5 September 1985|agency=AP|location=Cairo}} 5. ^1 {{cite news|title=Mubarak replaces interior minister|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1309&dat=19860301&id=D9RHAAAAIBAJ&sjid=zY0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=6708,190241|accessdate=24 December 2012|newspaper=New Straits Times|date=1 March 1986}} 6. ^1 {{cite news|last=Ross|first=Michael|title=Egyptian Army Storms Mutineers' Camp|url=http://articles.latimes.com/1986-03-01/news/mn-13057_1_security-forces-camp|accessdate=24 December 2012|newspaper=Los Angeles Times|date=1 March 1986|location=Cairo}} 7. ^{{cite web|last=Ashour |first=Omar |title=From bad cop to good cop |url=http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/research/files/papers/2012/11/19%20security%20sector%20reform%20ashour/omar%20ashour%20english.pdf |publisher=Brookings Institution |accessdate=24 December 2012 |format=Paper Series, No: 3 |date=November 2012 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130928053054/http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Research/Files/Papers/2012/11/19%20security%20sector%20reform%20ashour/Omar%20Ashour%20English.pdf |archivedate=28 September 2013 }} 8. ^{{cite web|last=Hicks|first=Neil|title=Problems confronting human rights defenders: New pressure coming from states|url=http://www.ichrp.org/files/papers/80/129_-_Problems_Confronting_Human_Rights_Defenders_-_New_Pressure_from_States_Neil_Hicks__12_July_2005.pdf|publisher=The International Council on Human Rights Policy|accessdate=24 December 2012|location=Lahore|date=20–22 May 2005}} 5 : 1924 births|2013 deaths|Egyptian military officers|Egyptian generals|Interior Ministers of Egypt |
