He previously served as a Judge of the Circuit Court from 2002 to 2014. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College, University College Dublin and the King's Inns.[1] He was called to the Bar in 1976, and to the Inner Bar in 1988. He was appointed as a judge of the Circuit Court in April 2002. He was appointed as a judge of the Tribunal of Inquiry into Certain Planning Matters and Payments in September 2002 and appointed chairman of the tribunal in July 2003. In October 2014, he became a judge of the Court of Appeal.[2][3] On 24 April 2018, the Government decided to recommend Mahon for appointment as the new Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, for a three year period with effect from 6 July 2018. Mahon was recommended following an open competition run by the Public Appointments Service. Mahon will be resigning as a Judge of the Court of Appeal to take up the position, which is a non-judicial position.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.merrionstreet.ie/en/News-Room/Releases/Announcement_of_two_Judges_Designate_of_the_Court_of_Appeal.html|title=Announcement of two Judges Designate of the Court of Appeal|work=MerrionStreet.ie|date=22 October 2014|accessdate=5 April 2015}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Mahon, Alan}}2. ^{{cite news| url=https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/mahon-tribunal-is-discredited-by-judges-says-pac-chairman-36842166.html| work=Independent.ie| title=Mahon Tribunal is 'discredited' by judges, says PAC chairman | date=25 April 2018}} 3. ^{{cite news| url=http://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/eng/News/Government_Press_Releases/Appointments_to_the_Court_of_Appeal.html | work=Department of the Taoiseach| title=Appointments to the Court of Appeal | date=29 October 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://merrionstreet.ie/en/News-Room/Releases/The_Minister_with_Responsibility_for_Defence_Mr_Paul_Kehoe_welcomes_the_Government%E2%80%99s_decision_to_recommend_that_Mr_Justice_Alan_Mahon_be_appointed_by_the_President_as_Ombudsman_for_the_Defence_Forces.html|title=The Minister with Responsibility for Defence Mr. Paul Kehoe, welcomes the Government’s decision to recommend that Mr. Justice Alan Mahon be appointed by the President as Ombudsman for the Defence Forces|work=MerrionStreet.ie Irish Government News Service |date=24 April 2018|accessdate=25 April 2018}} 9 : Irish barristers|Living people|Judges of the Court of Appeal (Ireland)|People educated at Clongowes Wood College|Alumni of University College Dublin|Circuit Court (Ireland) judges|20th-century Irish lawyers|21st-century Irish lawyers|1954 births |
