He studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1863 to 1867, under Julius Schrader.[1] He began exhibiting in 1870. In 1874–78 he was in Rome. He later taught at the Royal School of Art in Berlin, where he became a professor in 1895.[2] He died in Berlin and was buried in the Lichterfelde Cemetery; his grave has not been preserved.[3] WorksMany of Tschautsch's paintings depict subjects from fairy tales (such as "The Princess and the Spindle" from Sleeping Beauty[4]) and legends and from works by Shakespeare and Uhland. He also painted portraits and historical subjects.[2] In 1878 he painted the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Descent from the Cross in the transept of St. Joseph's Carmelite church in Posen, now Poznań, Poland.[5] References1. ^"Tschautsch, Albert", in Dr. Hermann Alexander Müller, Biographisches Künstler-Lexikon, Leipzig: Bibliographisches Institut, 1882, online at Retrobibliothek {{de icon}} 2. ^1 "Tschautsch, Albert", lot-tissimo.com {{de icon}} 3. ^Wolfgang Holtz, "Ein Spaziergang über den Friedhof Lichterfelde in der Moltkestraße", Bezirksamt Steglitz-Zehlendorf, City of Berlin, retrieved 13 February 2015 {{de icon}} 4. ^{{cite journal|year=1878|title=The Princess at the Spindle|journal=The Aldine|volume=9|issue=4|pages=139, 141|jstor=20637544}} 5. ^"Kirche des hl.
