EtymologyAl Daayen derives its name from the Arabic word "dhaayen", which roughly translates to "travel". It was given this name in reference to the Qatari tribes who abandoned the village and traveled elsewhere in search of water and suitable pasture.[4] HistoryJ.G. Lorimer's Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf gives an account of the village of Al Daayen in 1908: {{quote|A village on the eastern coast of Qatar about 20 miles north of Doha. It is closely connected with the village of Simaisma, which is distant from it only about 1 mile westwards. Dha'ain consists of about 150 houses, mostly of Al Bu Kuwarah [Kuwari] with some of Hamaidat and a few of Madhahakah. About 70 pearl boats belong to the place, besides 10 trading vessels and 10 fishing boats. Transport animals are 10 horses and 60 camels. Drinking water is from 'Awainat Bin-Husain, 6 miles inland.[5] }} Lorimer also notes that a man named Ahmed bin Salman committed piracy off the coast of Al Daayen in 1902.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://mdpsqatar.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?appid=176f9078489a4e1581ff1196c308682f|title=District Area Map|publisher=Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics|accessdate=1 March 2019}} {{Al Daayen Municipality}}{{Qatar-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.qsa.gov.qa/eng/publication/annabs/2014/1_Population2013.pdf|title=2010 population census|publisher=Qatar Statistics Authority|accessdate=28 July 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.baladiya.gov.qa/cui/view.dox?id=611&siteID=2|title=Al Daayen Municipality|publisher=Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning|accessdate=28 July 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://geoportal.gisqatar.org.qa/qmape/index.html|title=District map|publisher=The Centre for Geographic Information Systems of Qatar|accessdate=22 May 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.qdl.qa/en/archive/81055/vdc_100023909213.0x00007b|title='Gazetteer of Arabia Vol. I' [491] (522/1050)|publisher=Qatar Digital Library|accessdate=28 July 2015}} This article incorporates text from this source, which is in the public domain. 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.qdl.qa/en/archive/81055/vdc_100041590922.0x000075|title='Persian Gulf Gazetteer, Part II: Geographical and descriptive materials, Section II: Western Side of the Gulf' [58v] (116/280)|publisher=Qatar Digital Library|accessdate=21 August 2018}} 1 : Populated places in Al Daayen |
