Aleksandra Kurzak (born 7 August 1977 in Brzeg Dolny) is a Polish operatic soprano. She had been successful in light and coloratura soprano roles and gradually taking on heavier roles in bel canto and Verismo repertoire.[1] She has performed on many prominent international stages across Europe and Northern America including Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera.

Early life

Kurzak is daughter to operatic soprano Jolanta Żmurko and horn player Ryszard Kurzak.[2] Born into a musical family, she began her musical studies at the age of 7, playing violin and piano.[3] She initially intended to become a ballet dancer but was persuaded out due to the difficult nature of the career. Before the entrance of the music academy, she dropped the idea of continuing both violin and singing and focused on singing when realising the long rehearsing hours required by the instrument playing.[4] In 1999, she made her opera debut at the Wrocław Opera as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro alongside her mother as the countess.[3] In 2000 she graduated with honors from Karol Lipiński Academy of Music, and later from Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. She received a doctorate degree in music in 2009.[5]

Career

From 2001 to 2007, Kurzak was closely associated with Hamburg State Opera, initially a student of the International Opera Studio, from the 2003/04 season,

an ensemble member.[6] During the period, she sang roles such as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Nannetta in Falstaff, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Musetta in La bohème.[7] In February 2005, she "celebrated triumphs" as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare.[8]

In December 2004, she made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera performing Olympia in Les contes d'Hoffmann.[9][10] In July 2005, she made her Royal Opera House debut as Aspasia in Mitridate, re di Ponto with Sally Matthews as Sifare. On her performance, Edward Seckerson from The Independent described her voice "near-perfect display of rhythmic, evenly-produced, stratosphere-reaching coloratura singing" while Tim Ashley from The Guardian called that she "delivers coloratura of such astonishing accuracy".[11]

She debuted at Vienna State Opera in 2008 as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia. On her Gilda performance in Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera in January 2009, Anthony Tommasini from The New York Times called "a luminous, impressively focused and agile coloratura voice and winsome sweetness".[12]

In February 2010, Kurzak made her debut at Milan's La Scala in Rigoletto.[13] She sang Violetta in La traviata for the first time at Warsaw also in February.[14] She debuted as Lucia at Seattle Opera in October[15][16] and was named 2010/11 Artist of the Year by the company for the performances.[17] She appeared at Los Angeles Opera as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in September 2011.[18]

She performed at the {{ill|Dresdner Opernball|de}} in January 2012.[19] In February she appeared as Susanna in David McVicar's production of Le nozze at the Royal Opera House, with Ildebrando D'Arcangelo as Figaro, Rachel Willis-Sørensen as the Countess and Lucas Meachem as the Count.[20] In April, she returned to La Scala as Susanna.[21]

In September 2013, Kurzak withdrew from Rigoletto in the Metropolitan Opera opening in November due to pregnancy. She was replaced by Irina Lungu and Sonya Yoncheva.[22]

In July 2014, she returned again to La Scala as Adèle in Le comte Ory.[23]

In June 2015, she performed the title role in Maria Stuarda with Carmen Giannattasio as Elizabeth I and Francesco Demuro as Earl of Leicester at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées[24] and debuted at the Paris Opera in Laurent Pelly's production of L'elisir d'amore in November.[25][26]

In March 2016, Kurzak returned to Adina in a revival of Bartlett Sher's production with Vittorio Grigolo as Nemorino at the Metropolitan Opera. She received praise from The Epoch Times for her "graceful and beautiful singing, charming acting and exquisite rendition of aria "Prendi, per me sei libero"",[27] and from The New York Times for "vocally and theatrically nuanced portrayal" of the character.[28] She made several role debuts[29] including Rachel in La Juive at Bavarian State Opera in July,[30] Nedda in Pagliacci at Zürich Opera House in September,[31] Mimì in La bohème at Berlin State Opera in December.[32][33]

In July 2017 she debuted as Liù in Andrei Serban's production of Turandot with Roberto Alagna as Calàf and Lise Lindstrom as Turandot conducted by Dan Ettinger at the Royal Opera House.[34]

Personal life

Kurzak married baritone Jacek Jaskuła[35] when she was 23. They divorced after 10 years.[36] She married French tenor Roberto Alagna in November 2015.[37] They have a daughter, Malèna, who was born on 29 January 2014.[38]
