Hanna was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland. He did his undergraduate work at Queen's University Belfast in physics and received his doctorate in 1972 in nuclear physics at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment near Harwell, as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1974.[2][5] After joining the global consulting firm, McKinsey & Co., he rose to the position of managing partner, of the Stamford, Connecticut, office and led the firm's microelectronics and software practices operations.[6] After retiring as a managing partner in 1997, he was Chairman of the Board until 2004.
