Lenard joined the Hamilton Tigers in 1940, but it was the next season, with the Hamilton Wildcats[1] when he was a star, leading the league in scoring and winning the Imperial Oil Trophy as league MVP. He again led the league in scoring in 1942, being named an all-star.[2] He joined the Royal Canadian Navy during the war, continuing to play football in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After the war he played with both the Wildcats[3] and Tigers[4][5] in 1945, but was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and eventually decided to go to university.[6] As a Golden Gael at Queen's University he was two time all-star. He is a member of the Queen's University Football Hall of Fame. Last Friday, former Queen's Athletics Director Al Lenard died at the age of 86. Lenard arrived at Queen's in 1946 and was a member of the football, basketball, softball, golf, swimming and track and field teams. Following graduation, Lenard took a position at Queen's as the successor of retiring Athletic Director Pat Galasso. He held the position for 20 years and oversaw the growth of Queen's Athletics from 16 to 42 varsity teams. In addition to his contributions to Queen's Athletics, he served a term as president of Ontario University Athletics and was a board member of Canadian Interuniversity Sport.[7] References1. ^Hamilton Tiger-Cat Alumni Association: Hamilton Wild Cats (Flying Wild Cats) roster {{Imperial Oil Trophy}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Lenard, Al}}2. ^Lanky Al Lenard Tops Eastern Grid The Vancouver Sun, November 3, 1942 3. ^Lenard Joins Tigers The Montreal Gazette October 3, 1945 4. ^Hamilton Tiger-Cat Alumni Association: Hamilton Tiger roster 5. ^Sports Ramblings - Al Lenard must be watched Ottawa Citizen, October 5, 1945 6. ^Gael Force: A Century of Football at Queen's, by Mervin Daub (McGill-Queen's University Press, 1996) p.257 7. ^{{Cite web |url=http://queensjournal.ca/story/2007-03-02/?flavour=mobile |title=Queen's Journal, Volume 134, Issue 35 - March 2, 2007 |access-date=2014-04-16 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140417024710/http://queensjournal.ca/story/2007-03-02/?flavour=mobile |archive-date=2014-04-17 |dead-url=yes |df= }} 8 : 1921 births|2007 deaths|Hamilton Tigers football players|Hamilton Wildcats football players|Ontario Rugby Football Union players|Queen's University alumni|Queen's Golden Gaels football players|Sportspeople from Windsor, Ontario |
