He was a former student at Queensland University of Technology in Australia, and organised a rally with his schoolmates and Nardo Wai in support of the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement during the 2014 G20 Brisbane summit.[1][2] His political opinions include the use of violence to fight against the police force. He is well known for participating in the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement, and establishing the student activism organization Student Front. Political ActivitiesOn 22 September 2014, when the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement began, Cheng, who was studying at Queensland University of Technology, saw in the news that student protesters had been arrested in Hong Kong, so he returned there to participate in the protest.[3] Early in November 2014, Cheng went back to Brisbane to plan for a rally against China during the 2014 G20 Brisbane summit.[1] On 16 November 2014, Cheng and Nardo Wai began their four hour rally in support for the Umbrella Movement on the lawn near the South Bank Parkland Suncorp Piazza outside the G20 summit venue. Numerous overseas students from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China participated in the rally.[1][4][5][6] On 6 December 2014, Cheng established Student Front, a student activism organization to fight against the "stage power" and to continue staying in the front line after the Hong Kong Federation of Students and Scholarism quit the protests.[2] He was arrested on suspicion of attending and inciting others to take part in an illegal assembly.[7] He wrote an article that indicated he was arrested on 26 December 2014 and failed to be bailed.[8] After the Umbrella Movement, Cheng continued with numerous protest activities, such as Gau Wu and the movement against parallel trading. He was arrested on several occasions and found it difficult to obtain bail.[9] He was then banned from entering Mong Kok by a court order.[10] On 2 March 2015, Cheng announced that Student Front was dissolved, and warned other activists not to depend completely on "student activism organizations".[11] On 23 March 2015, Cheng appeared in court for his arrest at the end of 2014.[12] On the morning of 27 April 2015, Cheng was engaged in conflicts with supporters of Avery Ng, the vice-chairman of the League of Social Democrats, outside of the Mong Kok Police Station because of disputes with the Umbrella Movement.[13] On 20 August 2015, Cheng was convicted of obstructing government administration, and sentenced to 21 days' detention, based on his involvement in Gau Wu last year.[14] See also
