Ambarella, Inc. ({{NASDAQ|AMBA}}) is a fabless semiconductor design company[1], focusing on low-power, high-definition (HD) and Ultra HD video compression and image processing products. The company’s products are used in a variety of HD and Ultra HD cameras including security IP-cameras, sports cameras, wearable cameras, drones and automotive video processing solutions. Ambarella compression chips are also used in broadcasting TV programs worldwide.

History

Founded in 2004, Ambarella started with professional high definition H.264 video encoders for the broadcast market. In 2006, Ambarella applied this technology to consumer video cameras and later to the security IP camera market.

Ambarella has been a supplier of SoCs (System on Chip) in video broadcasting, consumer video cameras, such as GoPro sports cameras[2], drones, IP security cameras, and wearable cameras, including police cameras.

In July 2015 Ambarella acquired VisLab[3], a pioneer in perception systems and autonomous vehicle research founded by Professor Alberto Broggi. VisLab has developed computer vision and intelligent control systems for automotive and commercial applications, including Advanced driver-assistance systems and several generations of autonomous vehicle driving systems.

Products

In January 2017, Ambarella introduced the H22 System-on-Chip[4] (SoC) targeting a new generation of 4K drones and sports cameras with leading-edge video features. The H22 SoC is capable of encoding 4K Ultra HD video at 60 frames per second using the H.265 (HEVC) or H.264 (AVC) video formats, and supports advanced Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) up to 4K resolution.

In January 2017, Ambarella introduced the H3 System-on-Chip[5] (SoC) for high-end drones and a new generation of video cameras, including 360-degree and virtual reality cameras. The H3 video SoC enables 8K Ultra HD H.264/AVC video at 30 frames per second, as well as multiple video streams with equivalent performance, including 360-degree cameras with dual 4KP60 sensor video capture.

In January 2017, Ambarella introduced its AEC-Q100 qualified A9AQ family of automotive camera System-on-Chips[6] (SoCs). The Ambarella A9AQ is a 4K Ultra HD single-chip solution for single or multi-camera electronic mirror, surround view, and video recording systems. Ambarella also introduced its B6 family of 4K Ultra HD capable serializer/deserializer (SERDES) companion chips to enable high performance video camera applications based on the A9AQ SoC.

In April 2017, Ambarella introduced the S5L and S5LM SoC[7] (System on Chip) families to enable a new generation of 4K IP security cameras. The S5L is designed for professional IP cameras and includes 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing, multi-streaming, on-chip lens distortion correction, and dual video inputs.
