The purpose of the dam is flood control, water supply and hydroelectric power generation. Construction on the dam began in 1971 and was complete in 1976. The {{Convert|83|m|ft|0|abbr=on}} tall rock-fill, central clay core dam withholds a reservoir of {{Convert|1248000000|m3|acre.ft|0|abbr=on}} and provides water to an 80 MW pumped-storage power station.
