Originally built in 427 AD, the palace is located in the Taesong district of Pyongyang, North Korea,[1] at the foot of Mount Taesong.[2] The layout of the palace closely followed the Chinese architecture system and its Confucian principles.[1] The palace was built after the transfer of the capital to Pyongyang, during which political groups familiar with Chinese culture became a new bureaucratic group under the king's patronage.[3] The palace is surrounded by a wall, {{convert|2488|m}} in total circumference, one side being {{convert|622|m}} long. The total area of the palace is {{convert|380000|m2}}. Three streams flow down the mountain; one leading into a pond within the palace, the other two filling moats to the east and west of the complex.[2] The palace featured landscaped gardens.
