WorksOne of Ania's early projects, Hotel Polen, referred to the Hotel Polen fire (which became "part of Bien's wider theme of destruction"[2]) in Amsterdam, 1977, and established her reputation in Dutch art circles.[3] The collection of photographs illustrated a hotel before World War II, showcasing the relative luxury of middle-class travel in Europe, but objects in the photographs associated with the Holocaust indicate that this was a "doomed" way of life.[3] She fabricated 18 replicas of the hotel's menu stands, and used them to display the photographs. David Levi-Strauss wrote that Bien's art piece is a "polysemous work of absence, in which what happens between images is the most important."[4] The work was displayed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1987 and at the Amsterdams Historisch Museum in 1988.[5] Some of Bien's work is concerned with Franz Kafka; one of her photographs has her place her hand on a portrait of Kafka's, in response to a note he wrote in 1924 to Dora Diamant, "Place your hand on my forehead for a moment, so I can gain courage."[6] Her 1989 installation Past Perfect asked "what would have happened had [Kafka] not died in 1924, but instead had come as a refugee to America in the late '30s."[10] It gained her international recognition,[3] and was also shown in Jerusalem.[7] Bien is interested in war, discrimination, and the plight of refugees.[3] She contributed photographs from a centre for asylum seekers in Haarlem to a 1994 book on refugee children in such centers in the Netherlands, Ontheemde kinderen.[8] She has also exhibited at Portfolio Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland,[9] and the Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam.[10][11] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Levi-Strauss|first=David|editor=John Berger|title=Between the eyes: essays on photography and politics|chapter=A Second Gaze|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1ofrAAAAMAAJ&q=%22ania+bien%22&dq=%22ania+bien%22&hl=en&ei=FnHlTujoK86atweqjP2lBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CE8Q6AEwBjgK|year=2003|publisher=Aperture|isbn=978-1-931788-10-6}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Bien, Ania}}2. ^{{cite news|title=Rev. of Warworks: Women, Photography and the Iconography of War|last=Cooper|first=Emmanuel|date=April–May 1995|work=Creative Camera|page=41}} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Osborne|first=Peter|title=Travelling light: photography, travel and visual culture|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8paweQpDMzEC&pg=PA178|year=2000|publisher=Manchester UP|isbn=978-0-7190-4401-4|page=178}} 4. ^{{cite news | last = Baird | first = Daniel | title = Between The Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics | newspaper = Brooklyn Rail | date = December 2003 | url = http://www.brooklynrail.org/2004/01/art/between-the-eyes-essays-on-photography-and-politics | accessdate = December 10, 2011}} 5. ^{{cite web | title = Hotel Polen//Ania Bien | work = Smithsonian Institution Research Information System | publisher = Smithsonian Institution Libraries | url = http://siris-libraries.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?uri=full=3100001~!450037!0 | accessdate = December 10, 2011}} 6. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://admin.nrcboeken.nl/recensie/het-verschil-tussen-fotografie-en-theater-de-hand-op-kafkas-voorhoofd|title=Het verschil tussen fotografie en theater; De hand op Kafka's voorhoofd|last=Freriks|first=Kester|date=17 May 1991|work=NRC Handelsblad|accessdate=12 December 2011|language=nl}} 7. ^1 {{cite news|url=https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/jpost/access/99707098.html?dids=99707098:99707098&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=Oct+11%2C+1991&author=Angela+Levine&pub=Jerusalem+Post&desc=PHOTO+BASED+ART&pqatl=google|title=Photo-based art|last=Levine|first=Angela|date=11 October 1991|work=Jerusalem Post|accessdate=12 December 2011}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.volkskrant.nl/vk/nl/2844/Archief/archief/article/detail/383291/1995/01/02/Fotografen-portretteren-jonge-vluchtelingen-in-asielzoekerscentra-Kinderen-in-een-niemandsland.dhtml|title=Fotografen portretteren jonge vluchtelingen in asielzoekerscentra: Kinderen in een niemandsland|last=Haijtema|first=Arno|date=2 January 1995|work=de Volkskrant|accessdate=12 December 2011|language=nl}} 9. ^{{cite book|last=Bien|first=Ania|title=I-D nationale |publisher=Portrait Gallery|location=Edinburgh, Scotland|year=1992|isbn=978-0-9520608-0-2|oclc=30555690}} 10. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|url=http://www.jhm.nl/actueel/tentoonstellingen/archief/home|title=Home: Ania Bien|publisher=Joods Historisch Museum|accessdate=12 December 2011|language=nl}} 11. ^{{cite book|last=Bien|first=Ania|author2=Leo Divendal|title=Home|publisher=Joods Historisch Museum|location=Amsterdam, Netherlands|year=1993|isbn=978-90-801562-1-0|oclc=55990120}} 10 : 1946 births|Living people|Polish photographers|Polish Jews|Jewish artists|Artists from Kraków|People from Amsterdam|Polish emigrants to the United States|American photographers|American women photographers |
