It is organized in Maryland with its principal office in New York City.[1] The company borrows money, primarily via short term repurchase agreements, and reinvests the proceeds in asset-backed securities. As of December 31, 2018, 90% of the company's assets were mortgage-backed securities issued by either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The company generates profits from the net interest spread between the interest earned from its assets and its borrowing costs, which is amplified from the use of leverage. As of December 31, 2018, the company had a debt-to-equity ratio of 6.3.[1] As of December 31, 2017, the weighted average days to maturity of its repurchase agreements was 77 days.[1] The company is externally managed by Annaly Management Company LLC, which owned by executives of Annaly Capital Management, and pays an annual fee of 1.05% of equity for management services.[1] The company is ranked 766th on the Fortune 500.[2] The name of the company came from the name of the area in Ireland that was ruled by the ancestors of the company's founder.[3] HistoryAnnaly Capital Management was founded in 1997 by Michael A.J. Farrell, after 26 years working for investment banks including E.F. Hutton & Co., Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch.[4] In 2004, the company acquired Fixed Income Discount Advisory, an investment adviser, for $40.5 million in stock.[5] In 2012, the founder, Michael Farrell, died after battling cancer.[4][6] In 2013, the company acquired CreXus Investment for $996 million.[7][8] Effective September 30, 2015, Kevin Keyes was named CEO of the company.[9] In 2016, the company acquired Hatteras Financial for $1.5 billion in cash and stock.[10][11] In 2017, the company sold its Pingora servicing subsidiary.[12] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web | url=https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1043219/000162828019001442/a2018nly10-k.htm | title=Annaly Capital Management, Inc. 2018 Form 10-K Annual Report | publisher=U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission}} 2. ^{{cite web | url=http://fortune.com/fortune500/annaly-capital-management/ | title=Fortune 500: Annaly Capital Management}} 3. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2015/03/21/7-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-annaly-capit.aspx | title=7 Things You Probably Don't Know About Annaly Capital Management Inc. | first=Dave | last=Koppenheffer | work=The Motley Fool | date=March 21, 2015}} 4. ^1 {{cite news | url=https://in.reuters.com/article/annaly-farrell/annaly-capitals-farrell-dies-after-battle-with-cancer-idINL1E8LL7QZ20121021 | title=Annaly Capital's Farrell dies after battle with cancer | work=Reuters | date=October 21, 2012}} 5. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/03/business/company-news-annaly-mortgage-says-it-is-acquiring-investment-adviser.html | title=ANNALY MORTGAGE SAYS IT IS ACQUIRING INVESTMENT ADVISER | agency=Bloomberg News | publisher=The New York Times | date=January 3, 2004}} 6. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/nytimes/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=160607245 | title=Michael Farrell: Obituary | work=The New York Times | date=October 23, 2012}} 7. ^{{cite press release | url=https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20130131005465/en/Annaly-Capital-Management-Announces-Agreement-Acquire-CreXus | title=Annaly Capital Management, Inc.
