| website = {{URL|mpi.nl/people/cutler-anne}} | footnotes = | spouse = | children = }}(Elizabeth) Anne Cutler (born 1945)[1] FRS[5] is a Research Professor at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, Western Sydney University and Emeritus Director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen.[2][3][4][5] EducationAfter studying languages and psychology in Melbourne, Berlin and Bonn,{{fact|date=January 2017}} Anne Cutler embraced psycholinguistics when it emerged as an independent field, going on to complete her PhD in the discipline at the University of Texas at Austin.[5][6] Career and researchAfter postdoctoral research fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Sussex, she worked as a research scientist at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Applied Psychology Unit at the University of Cambridge.[5] Subsequently, she became Director at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and Professor of Comparative Psycholinguistics at Radboud University.[5] Her research, summarised in the book Native Listening,[7] centres on human listeners' recognition of spoken language, and in particular on how the brain's processes of decoding speech are shaped by language-specific listening experience.[5] Awards and honoursCutler was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2015.[8] Her certificate of election reads: {{centred pull quote|Anne Cutler has explained some of the major puzzles concerning how listeners decode speech. She was the first to demonstrate that the mother tongue determines the way speech is segmented into units and that these units are different in different languages (syllable, stress, mora, respectively in French, English and Japanese). She has demonstrated that listeners adapt quickly to phonemic categories with different speakers and that this is done on the basis of abstract representations, and not episodic exemplars.
