BiographyRuprecht was born in Szomolnok, Hungary in 1748. He graduated from the Mining Academy of Selmecbánya where he later became a professor of chemistry and metallurgy in 1779. He was the first to melt platinum and contributed to the discovery of tellurium in 1784.[1][2] Ruprecht was the first to theorise that alkaline earth metals were compounds rather than elements; later proved by Humphry Davy.[3] This theory caused some controversy in the chemistry community due to the previous assumption of earths being fundamental substances.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.euchems.eu/publications/100-distinguished-european-chemists/18th-century/ruprecht-antal.html |title=Ruprecht, Antal (1748-1818) |work=European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences |accessdate=23 February 2014 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140301063547/http://www.euchems.eu/publications/100-distinguished-european-chemists/18th-century/ruprecht-antal.html |archivedate=1 March 2014 }} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Ruprecht, Antal}}2. ^{{cite journal |journal= Nachrichten aus der Chemie |year= 2002 |pages= 712–715 |volume= 50 |issue= 6 |title= Chemistry in Hungary |doi=10.1002/nadc.20020500612|last1= Görög |first1= Sándor }} 3. ^{{cite book |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=F0Bte_XhzoAC&lpg=PA3&dq=Ruprecht%20Antal&pg=PA3#v=onepage&q=Ruprecht%20Antal&f=false |title= Extractive Metallurgy of Rare Earths |author= Nagaiyar Krishnamurthy & Chiranjib Kumar Gupta |year= 2004 |page= 3 |publisher= CRC Press |isbn= 978-0203413029}} 4. ^{{cite book |url= https://books.google.com/books?id=53APqy0KDaQC&lpg=PA118&dq=Ruprecht%20Antal&pg=PA118#v=onepage&q=Ruprecht%20Antal&f=false |title= History of Analytical Chemistry |page= 118 |author= Ferenc Szabadvary |publisher= CRC Press |year= 1993 |isbn= 978-2881245695}} 4 : Hungarian chemists|1748 births|1818 deaths|People from Gelnica District |
