He migrated to Toronto from Azerbaijan at age 10 and started boxing in 2007 after his brother recommended the sport for self-defense.[1] Amateur careerHe won a gold medal in the men's light welterweight category at the 2015 Pan American Games. He represented Canada at the 2012 Brandenburg International Tournament (bronze), 2012 Youth World Championships (top 10) and 2013 Odessa, Ukraine, International Tournament (gold).[1][3][4][5] Biyarslanov qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 64 Kg division by earning one of two spots at the American Olympic Qualification tournament by finishing first after winning three bouts in a row.[6] At the Summer Olympics, Biyarslanov won his first bout in the round of 32, but fell short against eventual bronze medalist Artem Harutyunyan of Germany in the round of 16.
