"Art" Haywood is an American politician from Pennsylvania currently serving as a Democrat member of the Pennsylvania State Senator for the 4th district. Prior to being elected to the State Senate in the 2014 election, Haywood practiced law and served as a commissioner in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania.[1][2] BiographyHaywood is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and attended Morehouse College. He earned a law degree at the University of Michigan Law School and studied at the London School of Economics as a Marshall Scholar. He began practicing law and moved to the Philadelphia area in 1985. In 2009, he and Kathy Hampton challenged and defeated two incumbent township commissioners during the Democratic primary and ultimately were elected as Cheltenham Township commissioners. Haywood later served as President of the Board of Commissioners. Haywood was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in the 2014 election, defeating incumbent Senator LeAnna Washington and Brian Gralnick. He and his wife, Julie Haywood (née Billingslea), married in 1989 and have three adult children.[2] In 2008, the Haywoods were prominent and active volunteers in the campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama.
