Ashraf El-Ashmawi (Arabic:أشرف العشماوي) is an Egyptian author, judge and legal scholar.[1] He worked in the public prosecutor's office for many years and served as a judge in the Egyptian court of appeals. More recently, he has worked as legal advisor to the Supreme Council of Antiquities.[2] He has written extensively on crime prevention, including a recent book entitled Legal Thefts: Stories of Thefts of Egyptian Antiquities, Their Smuggling and Attempts to Recover Them. In 2012, he served as an investigating judge in a case involving illegal foreign funding of Egyptian NGOs.[3] El-Ashmawi contributes regularly to newspapers and websites, touching on social and political issues as well as more specialized subjects such as the history of Egyptian antiquities. He has written two novels, The Time of the Hyenas and Toya. The latter was longlisted for the 2013 Arabic Booker Prize. His Novel published in 2018 is Lady of Zamalek B This novel takes place in zamalek , a famous district in cairo .It’s an island in the heart of Cairo connected to the River banks which has witnessed many phases of growth and is well known till now as a very refined district. The novel starts with a real incident that has happened in the late 20s of the 20th Century to a famous Jewish millionaire named Soliman Shekoral, the owner of famous shops chain. He was killed by five men, four of them were foreigners working with him, the fifth was able to escape from authorities. The author built the novel’s main plot on the fifth Egyptian man who was named Abbas El Mahlawy. Shekorel’s murder accident will be a turning point in the lives of the novel’s heroes. We will witness the socioeconomic changes in the Egyptian society before the 1952 revolution and till the year 1990. The novel has five main heroes who narrate their stories and who completes the story of the other character from his own point of view. Abbas starts his life working in a prostitution house in Alexandria in a time when prostitution was permitted in Egypt. He was then involved in the murder of Shekoral and we find him during president Mubarak era main candidate in the Egyptian national party. We have in the novel two main heroines, Nadia and Zeinab El Mahlway. Through out the novel we will not know whether Nadia or Zeinab or both, the lady of Zamalek. Both have great influence on the novel’s incindences. Zeinab was Abbas sister who bought her with him Cairo and who tried to make from her an aristocratic lady though she didn’t complete her main education. Through out the novel we will see how Nadia was confused and unsatisfied with her life, she was introduced to be Abbas only daughter from Paula the widow of Shekorel. At the end of the novel we will discover that Abbas didn’t marry Paula and also that Nadia is not Abbas daughter and she was an orphan Jewish girl for a famous diamond dealer who died in reality in 1950 in the famous areoplane crash accident. Al Ashmawy was so successful to mix real true stories with other imaginary ones to the extent that we don’t know what is real and what is not. You will feel that you are hearing and watching the heroes.
