The flowers are pollinated by wind and are hermaphrodites, having both male and female organs. It mostly prefers moist soil and also can grow in partial shade.[2] The species is considered to be the most balanced and economically important herbage in the semiarid areas of eastern Australia. It is a warm-season perennial grass. It is palatable to livestock even when it is dry.[1][3]References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.aridrecovery.org.au/_blog/Arid_Recovery_News/post/Plant_of_the_Week_-_Study_it,_learn_it,_love_it_and_make_it_feel_welcome/|title=Plant of the Week - Study it, learn it, love it and make it feel welcome|publisher= Arid Recovery|accessdate=3 Apr 2013}} 2. ^{{cite web|url= http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Astrebla+pectinata |title= Physical Characteristics|publisher= Plants For A Future}} 3. ^{{cite web|url= http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/pastures/pastures-and-rangelands/rangelands/publications/grassedup/species/barley-mitchell|title= Primary Industries Agriculture|publisher= NSW Government|access-date= 2013-10-31|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20150518080114/http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/pastures/pastures-and-rangelands/rangelands/publications/grassedup/species/barley-mitchell|archive-date= 2015-05-18|dead-url= yes|df= }} Further reading
