CareerBorn in Waterford, Gleeson was raised in a family that had a strong association with hurling. His mother served as juvenile secretary with the Mount Sion club for a period, while a number of his uncles also played for the club. He also started hurling at the age of 8 Gleeson played competitive hurling at the De La Salle College. He simultaneously came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Mount Sion club, winning under-14 and under-16 medals, before making his senior debut in 2012. Gleeson also played in the Fitzgibbon Cup with Waterford Institute of Technology. Gleeson made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was selected for the Waterford minor team. He enjoyed two championship seasons with the minor team, culminating with the winning of an All-Ireland medal in 2013. Gleeson subsequently joined the Waterford under-21 team, winning an All-Ireland medal in 2016. By this stage he had also joined the Waterford senior team, making his debut during the 2014 league.[1] Since then Gleeson has become a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won one National Hurling League medal, as well as being named Hurler of the Year and Young Hurler of the Year in 2016.[2][3][4].
