She was born in Malatya[1] and moved to Germany when she was eight. Polat studied German, philosophy and cultural sciences[4] at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Bremen.[2] Her film En garde was awarded Best Film and Best Actress at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2004 and the German Film Critics Award for Best Fiction Film in 2005.[3] Polat admires the work of David Lynch, Michelangelo Antonioni, Stanley Kubrick and Kurdish director Yılmaz Güney.[7] She lives in Hamburg.[4] Filmography[3]
