UDP-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine + beta-D-mannosyl-R UDP + 4-(N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl)-beta-D-mannosyl-R

R represents the remainder of the N-linked oligosaccharide in the glycoprotein acceptor.
